    Dragon Reflections #44

as I started shedding D&D products as I moved around, I did the opposite... I still have a handful of Dragons from the 1E era, but nothing later. I do have the DMA as well, but I haven't tried to use it on Win10....

    Dragon Reflections #44

hmm... I have this issue, but don't recall exactly when I bought it, might have been at one of the early Gencons I attended... this issue came out right about when I first got into D&D, but I didn't start buying the magazine for a while...

WotC 2020 Was The Best Year Ever For Dungeons & Dragons

okay, you can be the 'babbling' one, I demand that I be titled "Feebleminded Old Fool"...

    D&D General First D&D Character?

heh. Which brings up the question, "how did you name PCs back in the day?" I named a bunch of mine after characters in REH stories... I think I had three different fighters named Wulfhere. But I also plundered names from such places as a car (Saab), a rifle, (Hawken), and a musician (Zamfir)....

    D&D General First D&D Character?

My first D&D character ever was a bog standard fighter whose name I don't recall. He died. My first memorable character was a ranger named Falken. He lived. Quite a long time, in fact. I should mention that this was back in early 1E days, when having any PC live was something of an...

D&D General On how many dice we use

yeah, me too. I found an online site that sells all kinds of odd-sided dice (D7s, 9s, 14s, etc.) and put together a complete set of all they had, ranging from D3 to D48.... skipped only the D100s (might as well buy a golf ball) and D60s...

D&D General On how many dice we use

I have a big white dice bag which I used to just shove all the dice I had into. Later, I ended up buying a lot more dice bags with complete sets to help out other people in the group I was in, all sorted by color so we'd always know which person rolled which dice... ended up with 6 different sets.

    AD&D 1E AD&D two weapon fighting

not hard, since it's an optional class anyway. One of the things that always disappointed me about 2E was that, while they did what they could to make it compatible with 1E, it wasn't more of a 'cleaning up 1E and getting rid of the inconsistencies and making the rules a lot more clear' and a...

Worlds of Design: Pestilence & Plague

I can remember some discussion on this subject way back in 1E days, and my general thought was 'plagues can naturally spread faster than the limited number of clerics around who can cast 'cure disease' can stop it.' Plus, there's the 'the PCs won't know it, but anyway...." idea that maybe...

    AD&D 1E AD&D two weapon fighting

yeah, 1E had a hell of a lot of 'how do we interpret this?!' moments. Still, it was a lot of fun back in the day...

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

Ha! I read the whole thing! Sure, there was a lot of crying in a fetal position on the floor afterwards, but I read it all!

    AD&D 1E AD&D two weapon fighting

yep, one of those here. I'm not sure just how our DMs came up with it, but they all went with 'one extra attack only'. Of course, it was something that didn't come up a lot as not that many PCs had such high Dex that they could make use of it...

D&D General What DM-skills are you bad at?

yeah, me too, was never good at it. I always had a vague idea of the time of year, but other than that... nope. uh... wow. That's some campaign.... :)

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

in 1E (especially if you played the published modules), you encountered scads of 'lesser' magic items... +1 and +2 things that are great when you're low level, but you tended to find better stuff later on. Selling this stuff was always kind of an off stage grey area... I think we basically...

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

generally, but in one 1E campaign, I had a ranger PC who was approaching 'get followers' level, so I started paying for/keeping some of those extra magic weapons/armor we found... and when he finally did get his followers (which tend to heavily favor human and demi-human fighters), they were all...

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

I'll have to take your word for that one... don't know a thing about 4E, never read any of the material....

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

Maybe if you look at it from a purely XP/level advancement/mathematical standpoint. But people were always willing to play them. And mages, in spite of their frailty at low levels. And thieves in spite of the less than glorious selection of magic items available. Because, in the end, all...

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

shrugs, I dunno, it didn't really seem to matter. Not having to stop and add up XP in the middle of it all kept the flow of the game running smooth (well, as smooth as 1E ever ran). XP for monsters was a 'bookkeeping' detail that we generally didn't want to bother with during the game, letting...

D&D General X4 Master of the Desert Nomads (B/X) now available for print on demand!

and then the Master popped up again in X10 Red Arrow, Black Shield, where whoever illustrated him made him look a lot like Ayatollah Khomeini.... but yeah, it's nice to see this flurry of PODs on DTRPG all of a sudden....

D&D General Experience Points & Leveling: A Brief Primer on XP in the 1e DMG, and Why It Still Matters

hmm... under every DM I had way back in the day, you couldn't 'level up' in the middle of an adventure.... we generally calculated all XP from monsters and treasure at the end of the adventure... we always had one player whose job it was to keep track of all the things we slew, and another who...
