Darrick sighs with mingled weariness and relief, the tension ebbing from his shoulders. "Thank you," he says to Catherine. "We need to make plans," he continues brusquely, clapping his hands together. "Ducerne, Alicia, could you perhaps draw some kind of map for us? Give us an idea of how...
Darrick takes a step forward, and puts one hand on Catherine's arm. "This isn't right, Catherine," he says flatly. "It's not honorable."
He turns to Kaelan, spreading his hands. "You're right that it's the most...prudent course of action. Trusting them doesn't make much logical sense. But...
No, not really.
Again, the skills and abilities of the assassin class are also perfectly suited for a variety of other roles. Call it the "Commando", change the entrance requirements to Lawful alignment and "Must have completed one mission alone behind enemy lines", and there you go...
Absolutely. Nor do assassins HAVE to be evil, silly class requirements aside. Assassin works great for a commando, for a hunter, for *ahem* an exterminator....
That said, the assassin in MY game is...well, he's an assassin, frankly.
With a groan, Darrick's eyes flicker open...only to go suddenly wide as he sees who is tending to him. He flinches backwards instinctively, one hand scrabbling for his sword. He quickly subsides as he glances about and takes in the situation.
"Thank you," a rather confused Darrick replies...
As I find myself leaning more and more towards the "encounter based" way of thinking, I've been taking another look at the Recharge Magic variant from Unearthed Arcana. In theory, I really like it. In practice, though, things could be a very different story.
Has anyone hereabout employed this...
Beneath Darrick's still form, the pool of blood grows slowly larger....
Failed to stabilize again. It's traditional, in our games, to say "I continue to bleed," at this juncture.
The party that I'm running for right now is composed of (all eighth level):
Binder.
Druid -- gains and casts spells as a Favored Soul, at the player's request.
Ranger/Rogue/Assassin.
Rogue/Duskblade/Crusader.
...and straight Warblade.
It's that damned Duskblade who's done the most damage, but...
Well, I will be damned. I'm so used to female miniatures being...exagerrated to the point of absurdity, I just assumed.
I'll go over there and hang my head for a bit.
This might not be much help, but take a look at this guy:
He is, in fact, an elf. Problem is, I got him out of a box of random figures last year. I *think* that it's a Iron Wind Metals miniature, though.
Doing his best to mask his pain and shock, Darrick lowers his shield a little and turns to present his side to his foe. "You're not nearly as dangerous as you think you are," he informs the other man, making a sudden lunge which (to his own surprise) penetrates his opponent's defenses.
With a...
"I beg to differ," Darrick snarls at his foe, anger lending strength to his arm. Twisting to the side, he moves to stand next to Charles, flashing his companion a strained grin as he does. "Time to stop playing with him, eh?"
Better! 25 to hit, but a mere 5 for damage. Follow this with a...
With a muttered curse, Darrick lowers his shield a little to cover his wounded side. Twisting sharply, he swings at his foe...only to watch his blade skitter harmlessly across the man's armor.
"Stand down," he barks, "And you won't be hurt!"
Dangit. 15 to hit, 6 damage. Still...
"Cyre!" Darrick bellows his battle cry, blurring into motion as he charges the armored man. "Take them down!" he calls, almost joyfully. No question, this seems a fairer fight!
Second attempt at a reply...it's so much easier typing when I don't have a toddler in my lap trying to help...
"That was certainly...effecient, Trebuchet," Darrick says in a faintly horrified tone. "Under the circumstances, we might perhaps have offered them a chance to surrender, and gain some intelligence from them."
Sharing a glance with Catherine, he offers an uncomfortable shrug and says quietly...
In a thread over at RPGnet, I came up with a variation upon E6. It's one of those things that seems really neat in theory, but would probably not be workable in play. Nevertheless, I thought that I'd offer it for consideration.
E6 represents normal "human" limits. With human defined pretty...
Trusting his comrades to deal handily with these foes, Darrick shifts position so that he can see both of the corridors...in case any *other* foes should be drawn by the noise of combat.
Damn you, irony. Natural 20 for initiative, so that's a 24.
5' step to K8, so that he can keep a nervous...
"Excellent," Olaf chortles. Humming cheerfully, he advances into the room and approaches the beetle that he's bespelled. His brow furrows momentarily, and Olaf's left hand is suddenly crackling with blue-grey light. "Now," he says cheerfully as he reaches out to touch the beetle's shell...
