    D&D's Influences

In fact, I first found about D&D from an article in the newspaper about a local group who played D&D. They used D&D to replay LotR. I later became good friends with them and found out they did it every few years they enjoyed it so much. This was about '77.

Review of the Eberron Campaign Guide...

No need to be chastened. I just found it an enlightening side to the discussion, that you wouldn't see if you hadn't visited the WotC forums (and I find Keith's tastes and ideas about Eberron tend to run very close to my own).

Divine Power - Finally some nifty new toys for the clerics and paladins out there...

Not for me. I can wait a couple of days for a book. I won't lose my local gaming stores to a store that in fact ignores a street date. Added to the fact that both the major gaming stores in the area are run by friends of mine, and are a great service to have in the community. Now, Divine...

Review of the Eberron Campaign Guide...

This has been discussed in this thread on the WotC forums. Keith weighs in with:

another rpg industry doomsday article (merged: all 3 "Mishler Rant" threads)

The problem with this theory is you can discount everyone not in the industry because they don't have access to actual numbers, everyone who left the industry as disgruntled and everyone in the industry because they will be putting positive spin on it. No one can give real relevant, accurate...

another rpg industry doomsday article (merged: all 3 "Mishler Rant" threads)

Thousands might be an overstatement (depending on when you are talking about). The TSR catalog containing miniatures is advertised in The Strategic Review ('75-'76) with a refund of the cost with a purchase of $10 in miniatures. Fantasy miniatures are explicitly advertised starting with the...

    Gaming Generation Gap

As an aside, since Vance was discussed quite a bit earlier... The NYT a few days ago put up a story on Vance, which touches somewhat on why he is "lesser known."

    Updated Settings: Advance or Reimagine?

Some of the semi-finalists did (places 4-10). WotC got the rights to the finalists (places 1-3). In fact, the word is that at least some elements of Rich Burlew's entry were added to the final version of Eberron (the deathless elves).

Dragon 377 - Familiars by Artifice

Nice, low-key article. I like that this seems to be foreshadowing some of the creatures likely to appear in the 4E Eberron Campaign book. No artificers in my Eberron game right now to use (indeed, my current mini-campaign is all primal). Still, they are options and I have a few players who...

Review of the Eberron Campaign Guide...

Interesting. Lots of information, without giving away the reason for buying the book. The only thing more I would liked to have seen would have been a comprehensive list of monsters (not NPCs).

    Alternatives to D&D

Ah, I missed the connection to the original thread. I think you might be true, because you exclude so much, but so what? Do we need a "big, new, original RPG" right now? There are a huge number of RPGs out there. Right now a new RPG would have to be amazing, original, and appeal to a large...

    Alternatives to D&D

I think more people are playing non-D&D games than you know. D&D is certainly the top dog by a long shot. I know that White Wolf games have taken a slight hit in my area, but there are plenty of other RPGs being played. The issue I see right now is that there are so many other good RPGs out...

    On the Value of "Realism"

Setting aside the ability for "magic" to break those rules, I think when you are considering enough "realism" to allow a willing suspension of disbelief it's best to limit that realism. I think it's sufficient that the "realism" be what is observable by the average person. You might know how...

    Gaming Generation Gap

I am definitely older generation and have played all those video games. They aren't that high on my inspiration list. What I find most interesting here, though, is how self-referential this may have become to D&D (and other fantasy RPGs, but most D&D). A large percentage of the influences...

    Gaming Generation Gap

Now, I started as a sophomore in HS, in '79. Those authors were all "old school." I mostly went to the library and used book stores to start reading them. The fantasy books at the time centered around the Shannara books, IIRC. Now, I did love the the Gygax recommended books. What sort of...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

I can see this. They do sort of fill that niche in 4E (as far as I remember they hold the low to mid heroic tier as threats). However, I know at least one friend who object to kobolds not dying in a single blow and your solution would work for him. However, that is completely up to the DM to...

Why I think you should try 4e (renamed)

Which adds to the DMs work the need to balance this prestige class so that it doesn't become unbalanced in the hands of PCs. Unless you backload this class so that no PC can ever take it (which a lot of players and DMs consider "cheating") then it that's a lot of balance work. In 4E (and many...

    Chargen Fun, Game not-so-much

Spawn of Fashan hands down. During one convention I played in our table finished quite early. A well-known player pulled out his copy and we created characters. The game is unplayable, character generation was hilarious.

EberronToC and D&D Podcast: Divine Power

Not in the campaign setting though. You do have a statblock (albeit a minimum level Daelkyr) in the ECS, but the specific Daelkyr don't get any mentions until later (Player's Guide was first, IIRC). Sure, they get mentioned here and there in the ECS in various contexts. They likely will get...

New 4e updates to old 3.5 products

I don't remember a definitive statement it would be free. I know it was never stated that it would be available at launch, but close to two years after the release of the books that advertised the content is a bit absurd.
