    Rolling a d20 for Defense

Which is exactly the point I've been making. Just empasizing that they behave differently, and that that must be taken into consideration when deciding wether or not to use. I agree with you BTW, that the statistics of it make it a feature and not a bug. They do have the added effect of making...

Star Wars Saga Edition [SECR] Preview #2 is Up

I think what he was trying to say is that just about any protagonist in a book or movie based on high octane action is ridiculously competent. - Indiana Jones - Doc Savage - James Bond - Jason Bourne (both the Ludlum and the new version) - Han Solo - Obi Wan - Grey Mouser - Fafhrd (to a lesser...

D&D 4E Star Wars Saga Edition as preview of 4e?

Hey, I'm metric too. At least the french got one thing right... :p I was just bringing up the fact that the RCR use of 2m squares always bothered me, since 1,5 m isn't really that hard to use.

    Rolling a d20 for Defense

Well, to make it clearer. When you roll a d20 v/s a static DC the probability distribution is uniform, and it's simple to find the following solution: P(d20+X>=DC)----->P(d20>DC-X) Now, the problem of solving for opposed rolls between player A with skill X and player B with skill Y is...

D&D 4E Star Wars Saga Edition as preview of 4e?

funny you should bring this up. Every time I use 5' increment y have converted them to 1,5 meters to actually grasp what the distance represents. :D The RCR base of 2m always bothered me, since I was already used to 1.5 m, and a 2mx2m square is a huge area.

Star Wars Saga Edition [SECR] Preview #2 is Up

I don't think DCs will get moved much. Apparently between levels 1-10 the two system are very similar range wise. And IME at Level 10 you have all the ranks you need to achieve necessary static DCs. The only reson to increase ranks much higher is for skills that depend on the opposed check...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder

It opens this Thursday here in Chile, so I'll be there opening night. :D With respect to how he learns to use a sword: I cut my teeth on Tarzan, and he somehow learnt to use a knife with no problem either. at least Ghost could have memories of seen sword wielding.

Star Wars Saga Edition [SECR] Preview #2 is Up

Interesting. They of course left out exactly how you buy trined skills, and how multiclassign will affect things. Other than that, I like it. They did go whole-hog in consolidating Perception though. Just merging Spot and Listen into Notice has made it a very attractive skill in my True20...

    Rolling a d20 for Defense

Well, It's got to do with the probabilities of the opposed roll mechanic, whic I worked out a long time ago when I was working out the effect of the distance modifier to Spot and Listen. Basically it coms down to this. Against a static DC, you have to roll good. Against a variable DC, you only...

"Ok Doc, I don't want to know were you learned to jimmy a lock, but it's all yours." Checking his weapon safety for a last time, Larry does a last time audio check, confirming he is in contact with Cade. "We need some call signs, Cade. This is just lousy SOP. Besides call signs are cool."...

    Rolling a d20 for Defense

The comparison on grapple was because it's an opposed roll mechanic, in which it's very easy to gain a significant bonus over your opponent through feats and size increases. Another example would be disarm and the spiked chain + feats.

    Rolling a d20 for Defense

In opposed roll ties, I always give the benefit to the guy with the higher modifier, since all things been equal, the more skilled combatant should win. I'm not sure what the official ruling is in D&D though, but I've been using this rule of thumb for so long it's already lodged deeply in my...

    Rolling a d20 for Defense

I don't have AGoT, but maybe that is due to the fact that attack and defense are more balanced than in D&D, and their isn't as many extraneous modifiers that can skew things (plethora of magic items in D&D). Fact of the matter, a large enough edge is brutal in the opposed check mechanic (look...

Maybe I can talk them down. There's gonna be a pragmatist on the other side at some point." As he switches...

SWRPG thoughts for a newish DM

Yes, it works very well. Check out the following: True Star wars by ValhallaGH (here and at the True20 forums). He also has a very free flow space combat system based on a more narrative style than the minis based one in th RCR.
