What is the best game to capture that old 1E AD&D feel? - Please state why.

I voted other. 1e duh. one of the members of my first gaming group was offended by 3.x; when we had our 25 anniversary gaming weekend last year we each ran the particular version we liked. he walked away from the table to take a shower in the middle of the run using 3.0. The few times he...

Hey, Pluto! You're just a number now!

This really messes up MVEMJSUNP! There is an entire Saved By the Bell episode that centers on that! Aigggh, how dare they! :) Well, it'll always be Pluto in my heart.

    School shootings in Montreal

This morning they mentioned that the shooter had pictures of himself with guns on a vampire related website. He had a comment about how bad life sucked, goth and metal kicked a**. No other info that I heard yet.

    What To Do with Player?

That means he lied to you as the DM and to the players. Tell him no 'Real Men' needed in this game, Good fantasy men will do fine. He will have respect fo ryou stainding up to him and beg to come back; he will even lie further and tell you that he will play Good but don't believe him.

    This is just WRONG!

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4960468 Barbie has a new pooch, and you can feed it and it will 'eat' the doggie treat! But... they took it one step too far.... "with magnetic pooper scooper"!!!!!

Victory *and* death: Would you enjoy this?

I like the idea that a character's end can be heroic, can have some effect in the game world beyond the actual battle that caused his death. What does the Alamo, the Charge of the Light Brigade, Pickett's Charge mean to you? The men there knew they were likely to die in each case but they...

The 10-foot pole, antithesis of what adventuring should be?

Consider Indiana Jones. His 'ten-foot pole' is research. If he does his research and pays attention to it then traps are usually not a problem. He usually is caught off-guard by people, which a ten-foot pole is only usefull for smacking them after the betrayal. Also, note, the main trap with...

Is it a good idea to pull a lever in a dungeon?

I played a monk that was in a dungeon with a pool of acid with a key at the bottom of it. My monk dove in to grab the key and jump back out. It was total metagaming in that I thought if I made my save I might get in and out without taking damage!. He had scars from being beaten while a slave...

Total Newbie: Tell Me About Magic: The Gathering

Fun game, ultimately costs too much. Play D&D; cheaper and more entertaining overall.

    [September] What are you reading?

"Assassin's Apprentice" by Robin Hobb, first of the Farseer Trilogy. Great start, story is about a bastard son of royalty and how some choices are made for him that give his life focus... as an assassin for the King. Good fantasy, the world is given depth along the way as the boy is educated...

who should choose familiar/spells DM or player?

Back in first edition we used that Familiar spell and played it that if you sent away a familiar you had to wait one game year to try again, just like with a 'no familiar' roll. Now, one DM decided that being an apprentice wizard to learn magic you should make a charisma check to determine...

    What is a dungeon?

A dungeon is a heavily fortified underground defense installation. Did you see the 'caves' used by the Taliban in Afganistan? A couple of years ago a news show had a 3d video of the caves and it looked exactly like what a dungeon would be! Long corridors, doors every so often to small sets...

Wierd Pete's lament in KODT #116 - is it true???

The best MMORPG cannot provide the immediacy and variety of any, even a bad, human DM. MMORPGs are great fun, but it is always within the limit of the game design and programming. That does not exist with pen and paper gaming, which is unlimited in what some one can describe, what your...

Is this "Fair" - Part II

Fair. In a campaign, 1e circa '79, we played as soon as you left the farmland the encounters were run off the 3rd level dungeon charts from the 1e DMG. We typically rolled up 2 or 3 characters, 3d6, in order so that everyone had a chance to have at least one survive. One memorable encounter...

    What Sterotypes do you hate?

The writer rewrote the script for different shows. How many times have you though a plot seemed familiar when watching some show and it turns out it was same story on different show. Start with the hit and run where the victim is stuck in the windshield, perp drives home expecting to sober up...

    What Sterotypes do you hate?

I like Goku, though. He is the eternal innocent that allows the hypocrisy of the world to be revealed in all its sordid glory! I dislike the DBEndless Battles that accomplish nothing, however. DB was great, DBZ had some good parts and the rest I don't watch. From Wikipedia: All the other...

    What's your screen name from?

My first gaming group in '79 was played at Temple University in Philly. We went to a convention at Wilmarck Dynasty in Delaware and saw some with a group name on buttons. Thus, Temple Trolls. We got dark green buttons with medium green letters.
