D&D 5E (2024) True Polymorph now confers permanent muteness

Day 0 errata. The review copies had the wording you indicate and it got fixed

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

I'm not saying that specialization is inherently a bad thing. Just that it is the opposite of D&D 5e wizard design with their spellbooks and their ability to change their spells from day to day and their biggest spell list in the game. Wizards are designed to be generalist casters. That's a bad...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

Fortunately the sorcerer is no longer so weak that it needs that. And old twin was OP (which it needed to be to carry the class)

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

Major image exists. This is minor stuff done in a hurry. To add special effects layer on the cantrips. Yes I've used Thaumaturgy as rhythmic pounding of the earth shaking before casting the illusion. Don't forget Upcast Major Image at L4 (an excellent change). And to me that's where illusions...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

If you want a limited caster play a sorcerer, a bard, or a warlock. And pick a list of spells that suits your conception of your character. Some concepts for illusionists include enchantments, others don't. Wizards being the school specialists is bad legacy design; the wizard's big thing is...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

So what do your illusionists actually do from round to round other than create Illusionary shrubs to hide in? For how an illusionist attacks by default I see two basic options - psychic damage or weapons. GOOlock Eldritch Blast is psychic, making it one of basically three choices for an attack...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

And this illustrates a clash in approaches. The Illusionist is something that exists outside D&D. Is matching a pop culture illusionist more important or is matching the D&D implementation more valuable? I'd consider the latter incestuous and the former far more important but reasonable people...

D&D General D&D 2024 does not deserve to succeed

It's IMO far more deserving of success than D&D 2014 where the problem wasn't the malice of the corporate overlords but e.g. pandering to the RPG Pundit. And the laziness of the designers where there were abilities that seemed to be written without even a thought towards play (Assassin, Beast...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

Levels 1-4 it's legit to have gone True Strike instead of Eldritch Blast in the 2024 rules. TS is stronger at 1-4 with or without Agonizing Blast. Hex is something you need to play dirty to use as a warlock at higher levels. You cast it before a short rest, rest up, and bring hex plus all your...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

Pre 14 means pre level 14 here - Illusionary Reality is a game changer. And warlocks are far more focused magically than wizards

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

At least the D&D team in 2024 are in a better place than they were in 2014. They aren't putting thanks to the RPG Pundit and Zak S into the credits - and 2024 isn't nearly as half-assed as 2014 with e.g. a quarter of the the Warlock invocations giving you less than an extra spells known was...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rant about Forced Movement

The problem is that WotC didn't follow its own paradigm and screwed up in 2024. There should be three types of zone. Physical objects like spikes and blade barriers you get hurt for moving through Fast zones like crackling lightning or spirit guardians that you get hurt for starting your turn...

D&D General Illusionists better in 2024

I have one core issue with the Illusionist - that if you want to really specialise in Illusions then pre-14 the GOOlock does it better. No minor image as a bonus action, but any of Silent Image, Disguise Self, or Invisibility at will. Illusions silent and component free. And on a much much...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

The extra attack on a crit or kill is melee only. The extra damage per attack (replacing power attack) is heavy weapons only - which includes two handed weapons, polearms, longbows, and heavy crossbows.

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

This depends what you are trying to do. At least for me the Celestial Warlock is my go-to "I have no idea what everyone else is doing so I'm building a jack of all trades that can cover any role adequately while not being a spotlight hog" class. You can heal, you can scout, you can talk, and you...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

Light crossbow leaves you at d8+d6+2*Cha which leaves you an average of 3 points behind 2*(d10+Cha).

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

True Strike in the hands of a Celestial Warlock does almost as much damage as Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast in the level 6-10 range - and you've saved an Invocation for ... whatever. And there is one reason to use other cantrips over Fire Bolt - you're in melee and don't want Disadvantage.

    D&D 5E (2024) Warlock -- initial analyses

I don't see widening the spell selection when you can just use the pact library ticket to get a tome with two different rituals.

    D&D General Warlock vs Sorcerer

Sorcerers are as specialist as any casting class gets. If I were looking for a generalist warlock would be on the short list with bard, druid, and ranger.

    D&D General Warlock vs Sorcerer

Where "access to" is a very theoretical measure. Any given Divine Soul Sorcerer only knows two spells more than a warlock of the same level and doesn't have the invocations or pool of holy light. Divine Soul sounds good until you try to build one.
