Daggerheart Releases Another Round of Playtesting, Including Two New Classes

Just to clarify this Unearthed Arcana is the Wizards of the Coast public playtest area. The two classes being adjusted are not in the core rulebook and are a being adjusted as a response to playtesting to be ready for a future book. The actual errata amounts to a single side and includes...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

My mental boundary for D&D variants is somewhere near but probably including Dungeon World.

This is their version of WotC's Unearthed Arcana

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

For the record this is one everyone I know who likes both games gets in a heartbeat (although "love letter to" is the more common phrasing) and none of those who hated 4e do in the slightest because the game they hated wasn't the one we loved.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

And Mercer clearly learned 2e and uses a lot of DM force as you have to with that system. The two other things going on are that Daggerheart doesn't make Critical Role better at their style so much as it helps others into that style, and that they are all getting better as the campaign goes on...

    D&D General D&D Variants Forum

2D12. And one of the smart things they've done there is set the modifiers so an experienced 5e DM can use the same difficulty numbers they'd use for 5e and get the expected results.

    D&D General D&D Variants Forum

Depends on if you count D&D 4e as D&D. I would absolutely describe it as a 4e variant but, come to think of it, the direct overlap to D&D is almost entirely to things that were exclusively 4e, played in the "narrative style" of @pemerton, @EzekielRaiden, and others including myself. Which does...

So for me it's anything in general, media, and right here in meta that I can't read.

    RPG Evolution: Eat, Kill, Love

And there have been a few recent Delicious In Dungeon style modules. Daggerheart even has Beast Feast as one of its six campaign frames.

    RPG Evolution: Eat, Kill, Love

Most things we farm don't try to eat us because it's very calorie-inefficient. This doesn't make lion burgers or fried pirhanna taste bad - it's just expensive.

    D&D General D&D Variants Forum

Quick question: Should Daggerheart be considered a variant or adjacent and in the general forum? It's significantly more divergent than 13th Age (I'd say it's 1/3 D&D, 1/4 PbtA, and lots of other stuff) but is class/level based and designed to be accessible from a D&D base/to 5e players. (Given...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Oh, I really don't think Daggerheart can do everything. It's not rules light, it's not "death is cheap", it doesn't support detailed world simulations. It just provides very good support to the theatre kid end of the math nerd/theatre kid D&D dichotomy. And horror is theatre kid stuff.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

And I'm going to disagree hard. Daggerheart's mechanics with a couple of fairly simple rules in the campaign frame do more to support horror than Call of Cthulhu does. Losing (maximum) hope is far more impactful than losing Sanity because it's not such a restricted resource - and With Fear...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

It on the other hand is impossible to make the argument that Daggerheart does stop-motion as opposed to dramatic and chaotic combat. The initiative system is "whoever wants to go goes" with the GM getting a go when the players miss or roll with fear or the GM spends a fear point.

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

Just to put this into perspective Apocalypse World was explicitly designed for short (12 session) campaigns and I find 10 feels better - but it's a very intense 10 sessions. Daggerheart is aimed at 25 and there's far more heft and choice to levelling up in Daggerheart than post level 3 5e

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

And this is entirely a matter of the game being played; picking up the ball and running with it is cheating in association football but 100% central to the game in Rugby football. And if the rules explicitly allow me, as the GM, to introduce a new character as the result of a failed roll (as...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I consider Daggerheart an excellent game based on having played and run it - but it is absolutely the wrong game for you given what I know of your preferences. Different people have different tastes. As an aside I 100% would recommend it for the "narrative 4e" crowd like myself, @pemerton and...

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

Just to put this into perspective I don't believe PF2e ever broke the top 150 of books on Amazon. Daggerheart is already, from basically a standing start (Candela Obscura went nowhere), challenging for second place. The big question is whether they can turn their game into a game line. And they...
