How do deal with players who don't search?

I run games in which things happen based on what they do. Not in which the players need to do something to make the next thing happen. If they don't search, they will miss things that they could have found useful for their goals. Not my problem.

    OSR Why B/X?

Gygax was just really bad at editing. Some leeway has to be given because at that point nobody really had RPG rulebooks of that scope as references for how to do them well. But he still did it really badly.

    OSR Why B/X?

Yes. And Dragonlance didn't really cause the previous change either. They are both examples of the company fully embracing a newly emerging approach to marketing with a new flagship product.

    OSR Why B/X?

It mostly is about the art direction for illustrations.

    OSR Why B/X?

I've recently come to think that there are actually three distinct stylistic phases and not just two: Oldschool (1974-1983) Post-Dragonlance (1984-2002) Post-Eberron (2003-present) Eberron in itself is a cool setting, but I feel it became the default reference template for what kind of fantasy...

    D&D 3.x Retro-cloning D&D 3.0

Things I am contemplating for making 3rd Ed. smoother to run and play: Replacing creatures' Face with 3.5e's Space. Yay, spherical cows! Dwarves' movement speed is always 20 ft., regardless of their armor or load they carry. Only partial and full concealment and partial and full cover. Clerics...

D&D 3.x Making sense of the Orcs of Thesk

I've been diving into the various sourcebooks for the Northeast Forgotten Realms again these days, and one thing was to take another look at the various given demographic numbers given for the various regions. At first look, it appears like the modern D&D approach were all the different peoples...

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

I'm conservative with these things, so I am going with the AD&D 2nd edition classes. Fighter, thief, cleric, wizard, druid, and bard. Not Paladin, because it's such a weird and specific class that doesn't work together with many character concepts. And not ranger, because it's a class that...

    D&D 3.x Retro-cloning D&D 3.0

Side based combat turns are such a great way to speed up play in a number of ways. But I am somewhat hesitant because of how prominent Initiative modifiers are in the game. Lots of creatures and NPCs have the Improved Initiative feat. Replacing the feat with something else that fits the creature...

    D&D 3.x Retro-cloning D&D 3.0

The biggest difference between original and revised 3rd edition is indeed not the crunch. The systems are still similar enough that you can easily run all the early material even with the 3.5e PHB. Probably even with Pathfinder. Compatibility issues aren't really the reason I'm toying with this...

    D&D 3.x Retro-cloning D&D 3.0

One of the things people really seemed to have disliked about the original rules and that was greatly applauded as having been fixed in 3.5e was the number of "dead levels" for the different character classes. In hindsight, after having spend a lot of time with B/X and AD&D retroclones, I very...

    D&D 3.x Retro-cloning D&D 3.0

Back in the day when 3.5e was released, I absolutely loved it, like seemingly the vast majority of people. I dumped my old original rulebooks on ebay and was really happy with the new books that I kept using until eventually switching to Pathfinder. But in hindsight, the old 3rd Edition and 3.5e...

D&D General Nolzur creates inclusive miniatures, people can't handle it.

I can handle steampunk leg braces or magic hover belts, no issue with that. But I am one of the people who can't handle the dungeon wheelchair. At least make it a dungeon mechanical spider leg chair.

The thought of switching VTTs is so daunting

I bought Foundry recently because it's a single one time payment (something like 50€ for me) for the person who is hosting the game. For the players (and other GMs) it's just like using Roll20. Being reliant on existing rules modules for games I want to run, and it being much more complicated to...
