    Unpopular opinions go here

I saw a thread with a subject that really interests me and I love to talk about. But then noticed that it's a plus thread and what's the point of discussing anything if you're not allowed to disagree? It's not even worth reading what others might have written.

At what point does a thread become necro?

It's only necromancy if the thread is still dead after raising it. Otherwise it's resurrection.

D&D General Dave Arneson: Is He Underrated, or Overrated?

70s entertainment is influenced by 50s and 60s entertainment? You might be on to something there. :D

Musing on Conan themes in RPGs

It creates an interesting situation in which continuous readers of the series read most of the stories of the rowdy adventurer with the knowledge that in the end he will be a king. The first two stories are the second and third last in the chronological order. After The Phoenix on the Sword and...

What's your favorite haunted castle map?

I have to say the original Castle Ravenloft map. I know almost nothing about the adventure, but that map alone is stunning.

D&D General Dave Arneson: Is He Underrated, or Overrated?

I started getting interested in 60s and 70s wargames recently. I've occasionally read some posts that people wrote 10 years ago (damn, late OSR was that long ago?) but now that I have much more context about early RPGs and actually think about how I'd do a wargame campaign in a fantasy world...

The GM's World, the Players' Campaign

I think the most interesting part about playing RPGs is exploring the world, finding out how things work there, and using that understanding to your advantage to influence things. Uncovering the hidden secrets and mysteries of the world is the core of an adventure to me. The world is a puzzle...

So what are your informal expectations...or rules, for a RPG?

OSE, but I think all of this should carry over directly to the Dragonbane campaign I am planning.

D&D General Dave Arneson: Is He Underrated, or Overrated?

It seems to be a quite common opinion that RPGs were something that was going to happen in the 70s anyway. Arneson and Gygax did not exist in a vacuum and create games out of nothing. They were part of a collaborative community and I believe there were several wargames going on that could be...

    What is a "Narrative Mechanic"?

I imagine a narrative mechanic would be when the rules say "It is now Player B's turn to tell what the NPCs are doing or what happens in the environment".

Musing on Conan themes in RPGs

There is one time there's actually someone unexpected hidden under a cloak and that reveal makes the whole situation increase in weirdness rather than reduce it.

So what are your informal expectations...or rules, for a RPG?

That the normal local cultural customs of social interactions still apply when you play a game is so obvious it really isn't worth mentioning. There's probably whole libraries written on all of that. I have a whole bunch of parameters specific to my campaigns that are not actually game...

    Is "GM Agency" A Thing?

GM agency does not have to be traded for. Nor can you lose it or give it up. It automatically exists.

A Potential Earthquake in the Videogame Industry: UNITY Install Fees

When I saw their initial statement started with "It certainly has been a week, hasn't it?", I already knew everything there was to how they are going to treat the whole situation. Could also have started with "We did a whoopsy." and it would have come across as just as mature and responsible.

OD&D Keep on the Borderlands, some observations

Modules are meant to be different from adventures. (Though they precede adventures.) They are modular content to add to campaigns, not stories themselves.

    OSR Why B/X?

What even are the alternative? AD&D is a bloated mess and OD&D is incomprehensible. And while it makes decent efforts to teach the game to completely new people, BECMI's organization makes it much less useful as a source code document for creating your own hacks. It also has the cutesy children...

    Is "GM Agency" A Thing?

The DMGs are not books that have meaningful advice on setting up and running games. The very first one back in the 70s tried, but thar was also an incoherent mess. DMGs are books with rules that don't fit the page count of the DMG and the magic items chapter. They always sucked.

    OSR Why B/X?

Players making their turns when they are ready, rather than at a specific point in the queue is what speeds combat up significantly. Combat turns in a fixed order leads to players not paying attention because they know its 5 to 10 minutes until there's anything to do. And then they are surprised...

So what are your informal expectations...or rules, for a RPG?

Are we talking about things that are not about the actual playing of the game?

How Do You Like Your Extents of Progression?

One to Three: Characters start out as reasonably competent in their field and mostly become more versatile rather than more durable. Going up the ranks, but still playing in the same league.
