    What are you listening to?

Oh boy, do I have a story for you. 19 years me and some new friends I made when I had just finished school were sharing some of our favorite song files and I probably developed most of my musical taste that year. One friend send me a few songs by Dargaard and two by Theatre of Tragedy. I liked...

Game Mechanics Which Encourage Character Arc Progression

Someone described conflict or drama or something of that kind as "What the characters want, and why they can't have it." Character development and progression is the struggle and how you react to setbacks. When characters can just get what they want, there's not much story and tension.

D&D General Let us share our Elves and Orcs

I think when you take all the things about orcs that people like and make a new humanoid type from that, you basically have goliaths. I think we just should use those.

Ideas are easy, everything else not so much

The Savage Frontier: An OSRIC or OSE Advanced campaign set in the original version of the Forgotten Realms, following the originally presented idea that adventuring parties in Faerun are traveling mercenary companies. In the aftermath of the devastating war with the forces of Dragonspear Castle...

D&D 5E (2024) What spells should be dropped?

Zone of Truth. Who came up with this? Why does it even exist?! What's the point?!

There is now 880 episodes of Star Trek and 13 movies

And all I care for are five seasons of one show, and four of the movies. I've come to the realization that I am not actually a Star Trek fan.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark looks so good!

3d6 in order makes a lot more sense when only a 3 gives a -3 and only an 18 a +3 modifier, and the modifiers don't increase linear. Using the d20 system ability modifiers with 3d6 in order seems rather extreme. In B/X and OD&D, attribute scores don't really have much of an impact on character's...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark looks so good!

I'm actually intrigued by looking at the first pages of the rules.

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

I think this thread is actually a great idea. Resting to regain health and spells was created as part of a complex system that included time pressure and exploration rules. With all of that long gone from new D&D editions, keeping resting around makes as little sense as wandering monsters or...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

The main issue with 5th edition is that it insists on keeping the elements that defined the game in the 70s and 80s, while having discarded all the structures that gave them purpose.

    Weirdest Pop Cultural Spin-Offs

A kids' cartoon based on Robocop. WTF, 80s? It's indeed bizarre, but the insanity is the whole premise of the show.

    The Principle of Legitimate Intentions

What exactly does this propose for GMs to do, or for players to approach play?

D&D General What is two weapon fighting good for?

    It's a fashion statement.

    Three new Star Wars movies

The emperor coming back as a clone on a hidden planet where he stockpiled a massive fleet for his return is a straight ripoff of Dark Empire, the dumbest and most notorious of all EU storylines. They decided they don't want the EU because they strive for higher quality and then they just adapt...

Video Games: Nostalgia Vs Extinct Genres

I still believe that 1998 was the peak of videogames. Baldur's Gate Metal Gear Solid Resident Evil 2 Starcraft Freespace Thief Commandos Half-Life Unreal I think that was the time when 3D graphics had reached a stage of sophistication that allowed for the creation and establishment of the...

    Does Dual-Wielding = Double Damage?

Yeah, I'm with that. You can't really control two weapon points at the same time, and pretty much every fighting stance I can think of has one shoulder towards the enemy and the other away from him. The only way that seems plausible to attack with both hands in rapid, alternating succession is...

Is there a decent renaissance-era setting?

Does 2nd edition Forgotten Realms count as "decent". :p
