D&D General io9: 2023 Should Have Been D&D's Best Year, Until It Wasn't

What's different now is that the latest event will significantly cut into their ability to produce new products, in a year that is supposed to see the launch of a new edition and an in-house VTT, something very ambitious for a company whose history with developing D&D online services has been a...

I actually do agree with the statement. Which makes the whole think even funnier.

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

I only just noticed that the cover image in my post had been altered. The original says "Basic Game Adventure".

TSR Example from the worst TSR adventure module(s) ever published

People give plenty of probably deserved naughty word to The Forest Oracle. But I feel the depth of terribleness of Journey to the Rock is rarely fully appreciated. That thing has so much nonsensical backstory for a void of actual content, and the module goes out of its way to make sure the players can...

    D&D General D&D Loyalty?

My attachment to D&D is to an edition of rules from 40 years ago (actually preferring retroclones over the original books) and Forgotten Realms books from 30 years ago. D&D as a product line has lost me about 2007.

How can we sleep while our game is burning? Or, how many problems?

I stopped liking the d20 system. The D&D 3rd edition PHB looked amazing compared to AD&D, but after 10 years I had such a laundry list of significant issues that I got fed up with the whole d20 engine.

How can we sleep while our game is burning? Or, how many problems?

If I stopped using a game system because it has 3 things I don't like, I never would be running anything. It's not a matter of how many flaws a game has, but of how well the game as a whole is suited for the kinds of campaigns I want to run. If the game is a great fit in general, I can endure...

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

Having recently done a deep dive into the region, there certainly are some stylistic similarities. They are not drastically different. But I never made any connections between the East and Hyborian Age before. Thay and Stygia I can very much see. That could have been an inspiration. Narfell and...

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

Having gone through the whole thread again after sharing my own perspective based on just my own memories, I think while Gygax probably wasn't much of a Howard Fan, it very much looks like Zeb Cook was. Dwellers of the Forbidden City is the most Howardian D&D product I can think of. The one...

D&D General Reassesing Robert E Howards influence on D&D +

Having read a lot of Howard, I actually don't think there are really that many elements from his stories that have something similar in early D&D. There's one Conan story with an abandoned city in a desert, where the remaining residents are passed out on drugs, and there's a shadowy monster...

D&D General What are the minimum standards for a published adventure campaign?

My minimum base line is that it must not be a railroad. What happens in the adventure and how the adventure ends has to be a result of the decisions the players make and the actions the players take. If the events of the adventure are already predetermined and the players' participation makes...

How is this supposed to work? We're only allowed to say that all the influence was positive and can not disagree with other people's opinion?

Though actually, there are no jackals in Egypt. (At least now.) But there are hyenas in Turkey and Azerbaijan, which is fascinating.

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Depends on the players. But it also depends on the cost of a replacing a character. If you can be back in the game in 15 minutes, it's very different from if you'll resume play only in a week or two. And it will depend on how much more the old character could do compared to a new character...

D&D General Gaming From Above vs Gaming From Below

The issues of nobility and the problems of high level politics never had any interest to me. I don't mind if any characters are aristocrats, but in a game I want to deal with things that are immediate and feel important.

Pages assumes a degree of organization and concreteness that goes well beyond what I managed to do in 10 years of working on the setting.

Worlds of Design: Reassessing Tolkien’s Influence

Though we really can't blame Tolkien for that. He did nothing wrong, in that regard at least. We would have gotten uninspired knockoffs that copy the form but not the substance from any fantasy book that made a big breakthrough. "Clonan" is a term Sword & Sorcery fans actually occasionally use.
