What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

Timeline advances and metaplots basically make any setting unplayable. You can't touch any of the cool things in your campaign if you want to avoid your campaign conflicting with the official material. It's one of the dumbest ideas that ever happened to RPGs.

D&D General Tell Us About Your Gnolls! [+]

This thread had me thinking that for my world, gnolls probably should be natural hunters and scavengers. Unless it's made specific that creatures are magical creations, I feel they should be able to exist in a paleolithic environment with very few people around and no technologies and...

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

Yeah. I've come to the realization that the northern half of Faerun is meant as a New World that is still in the process of being settled and where play takes place, and the southern half is the Old World that provided the settlers and technologies for that northward migration into the...

    Unpopular Geek Media Opinions

Superhero movies were a waste of resources. Imagine what we could have gotten instead for all that money and labor. Star Wars should have ended in 2006 at the latest. It would be a better series as a whole if anything after that had never been made.

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

My current homebrew setting is pretty much my personal Forgotten Realms greatest hits turned into a mold for a new casting about a tenth the total size. The High Forest bordered by Rashemen, Vaasa, and the Dalelands, with Neverwinter, Telflamm, Baldur's Gate, and Westgate as coastal city states...

Worlds of Design: There is No Spoon

There might not be a wrong way to play, but there are certainly poor ways to run games. All games have some flexibility in what you do with them, but when you try to force the rules to do something they are poorly suited for, the game is just going to be much less fun than it could be.

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

Assuming we're not counting our own homebrew settings, it clearly would be The Savage Frontier for me. That little Forgotten Realms book can stand as a full campaign setting on its own, and the first version of the North from 1988 is a much more interesting place for adventures than all the...

D&D General Tell Us About Your Gnolls! [+]

Early in 3rd edition, there was a miniatures set with black demon gnolls. I don't know anything else about them, but they were cool to a 16 year old back in 2001. :)

D&D General Tell Us About Your Gnolls! [+]

My gnolls are Baldur's Gate gnolls. Baldur's Gate was the first non-children fantasy thing I experienced other than having read Lord of the Rings once several years earlier. (I thought it was neat, but didn't think about it any more at that time.) And gnolls are one of the coolest things in the...

D&D General The D&D Memes Thread

The great art is to make the players do a reverse transformation of their own. something something bandwidth, something something data compression

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Me thinks this has potential for future uses for my homebrew setting. Probably haven't even scratched the surface with being more specific with input. But can it only do square images? That would be really restricting for landscape images since it always wants to use up the whole space so you...

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

When I try several variations with additional details for "painting of a forest with mountains in the background", it always wants to do that little river in the center. :) Always got to have that river.

    What is A Mountain?

There is nothing remotely that high anywhere on the North Sea and Baltic coasts other than in Norway.

So this is what all this talk of black magic actually looks like. The pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. Is it possible to learn this power?

OSR What Do You prefer 1E vs 2E

All the good AD&D books are for first edition. They have assassins, monks, and half-orcs, and no priest spell spheres. And first has easier XP rules and no THAC0, which I still don't understand to this day. If I had to use AD&D, I would definitely want it to be 1st edition. (Or better OSRIC...

D&D feel/fun in games without class, level, etc. (+)

I am having high hopes for Dragonbane. I think it looks like a great system to run BECMI style exploration and domain games, but without class levels and spell slots.
