    Spaghetti Sauce

The point of Gladwell's talk and it's relation to D&D has to do with the dispelling of the notion of universal absolutes. Gladwell references his professional colleague Howard's work history to illustrate the point. This applies to D&D in several ways. If we extrapolate (as I assume the OP is...

D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

Dang it, PC. Some of us aren't even used to skill challenges yet and you're hacking the whole process. :) I'm liking the way I can use skill challenges to do stuff that otherwise might be clumsy or tedious to do as a straight combat encounter. You're just reinforcing that viewpoint. So far...

    Has Lovecraft become required reading?

Lovecraft is not required reading for D&D. You might better understand many references within D&D better after having read him, but he's not required by any measure. He's been influential in many key places throughout D&D repeatedly. More recent material has given him more transparent weight...

"If this problem is so bad, why aren't YOU doing it, NPC?"

Interesting side note: when NCSoft was adapting Aion from the Asian market to the American market, one of the considerations that had to deal with was the difference in how audience handle quests. To the Asian audience, the response to "Go get the foozle!" was "Okey-dokey" while the western...

    What 4e does right

This is probably my favorite change. While I understand many of the reasons why folks may not like this approach (and those reasons are valid, to be sure), this was a big deal for me. Many of 4E's rules changes were developed with the meta-game and actual play experience in mind. This means...

    Why I'm done with 4e

Didn't 4e launch in June 2008? That would mean we're less than one-and-a-half years out. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your point, just clarifying the game's only been out half the time you said. For my group, we didn't even try running our first 4E game until 6 months after...

"So...uhh, this is the Mudtunnel?" "Oh, aye! Only way through tha moontaine, innit?" "...and you liked it so mcuh, you named the town after it?" "What? Naye, lad...the emperor's tax man what came throo used it during floode season, true? An' he come through it a powerful mess. Right put...

I salute you, sir. This is WONDERFUL. If you can expand this for some of the other searches, like for powers...that'd be DANDY.

4e Warlocks - How Would You Fix Them?

Huh. Really? Interesting. The warlock in my game hasn't much bad to say about it.

How many practice sessions did you have?

We ran a 'test game', running through the first WotC module from start to finish to evaluate the system and then started a new campaign, which is now in its 8th session or so, I think (after we ended our already running 3.5 game). The 'test game' ran about 8 sessions itself, iirc.

    Why I'm done with 4e

For our group, 4E is working fine, but to each his own. We did some test sessions before settling on it...and part of the decider for us was how 4E jettisoned elements that we didn't like or felt had long overstayed their welcome. I can understand that it doesn't work for everyone. I just...

    Gaming Generation Gap

I wouldn't necessarily go that far. Where does Li'l Abner fall, for example? Once one of the most-read comics in history. Some are easy, like Terry and the Pirates or Pogo (though their content was not so easily pinned down). And I think Dick Tracy is a singularly bad example for...

Bob Haney's ghost will haunt you. THAT is old school. You kids and your New Teen Titans. Sheesh.

    How did WoW dethrone Everquest?

Every new high-profile MMO cannibalizes its competition...the question is whether it can sustain those numbers. EQ did this largely based on it being the first to successfully implement on a huge scale and having a sufficiently large user base as competition arrived. When something better came...

    4E, as an anti-4E guy ...

I can easily see that. However, in the context of the game for us, this tends to lend more flavor, not less. The fighter using his special movement power to circle to a flank without incurring an Opportunity Attack, the rogue tumbling out of danger, the shaman using his spirit to harry an...

Extreme Newbie question - dad playing with kids

Glad to have you here! While not a direct answer to your questions, I would recommend you visit The Young Persons Adventure League for some nice tips on how to run games for younger RPG players, as well as recommendations of systems to try. The guy who runs the site also runs The Escapist, a...

    Neverwinter Nights MMO Rumour

Well, the Joystiq article has criticisms, but it's hardly what I'd call a slam. Especially since he only got his hands on the 360 version of the game, which seems to be the chief source of criticism of the game. His complaints are primarily that he doesn't like the relationship subplots and he...
