N monsters of level X vs N characters of level X

This is a question that has been bothering me a lot since they started discussing monster design. They keep talking about monsters, but "hostile class-based PC races" haven't seemed to be on the horizon here. My campaigns involve a whole lot of opposition from humans and other PC-race...

    Division of Treasure

The PCs in the game I run make a lot of jokes about one character being greedy. (In fact, that character talks about himself as if he is monstrously greedy and power-hungry.) Then they give the treasure to whoever needs it. They've started to accumulate some rather riskier magic items, though...

Why Put magic Items in The PHB?

Makes perfect sense to me. Players need to look up magic items (regardless of edition) more often than DMs do. Putting the necessary information in the book every player can reasonably be expected to own is only logical - and means they don't have to keep borrowing the DMG. I'll be interested to...

D&D 4E The biggest claim about 4E that intrigues me

I can't help but look at this claim as missing the definition of "sweet spot." It's the gaming equivalent of Garrison Keillor's famous "the women are strong, the men are good looking, and all the children are above average." Understand that I am enthusiastic about the bits of 4e that have been...

OoTS # 484: At the end of the day.

I would bet good money that it also cuts off sending spells targeting people still within the blackout zone. Haven

Prediction: 3.5 DMs will *always* find players

Huh. With the general community of players I have to draw from, I could probably start a game with just about any rules system (well, okay, excluding FATAL or Synnibar...) and they'd be willing to play just to see what happened. I'll definitely run a 4e game when such a thing is possible, but if...

    Changeling the Lost

I bought this book at GenCon. My superbrief review of it is: This book is made of raw awesome. At somewhat greater length: it features an innovative system of magic replacing the system of bunks that I always found burdensome in C:tD. The presentation of changelings as loosely organized into...

Do You Have A Campaign Website? Do You Use It?

I've been using Shieldhaven's Wiki for a good while now, though I've let the campaign log slip out of date. Every once in a long while, one of my players actually remembers that there's a website. =) Haven

    PHB, MM, DMG covers

Though it's not a dealbreaker or anything like that for me, I strongly dislike this cover art. I was a fan of 3e/3.5e tome covers. I also liked the PHBII style of cover design. But I strongly dislike Wayne Reynolds' work with only a few exceptions. Haven

D&D 4E Hypothetical Scenario: What if WotC chooses never to do 4E?

I can't think of a multiplayer roleplaying game that hasn't released some sort of comprehensive rules fixes from time to time. MMOs have patches that both introduce new content and tweak rules with which the designers are dissatisfied on a regular basis. Fans howl in protest or chortle with...

    Flat earth

Exalted has a flat world. But you only fall off in one direction, so far as I know. The other directions stretch infinitely far, but they're essentially elemental planes by that point. Haven

What is the longest you've ever played a single PC?

Tabletop, RL years: January 2004 to present. This character is an 8th level human warmain, having started at 1st level. The campaign runs 6-10 times per year. Tabletop, number of sessions: Okay, I don't have the session count, but probably 35-40 sessions over something less than two years...

    Piratecat's storyhour reborn! (updated July 4, 2006)

...I don't even know these people. Never met them in my life. But I've read and so thoroughly enjoyed your SH over the past several years that mention of a reunion makes me happy. Er. This is either high praise for your story hour, or very, very creepy. ;) Discerning between the two is left...

I'm Done with "I'm Done "Threads

I demand with great shouting, particularly within the confines of a Noah's Bagels establishment (wherever that may be) that this thread be merged with the Meta-Troll thread. And if the moderators don't accede to my obscure and belligerent demands, then I'm going to quit D&D, lose weight, and...

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

Considering that the PCs in my game are 6th level at the moment, and I've seen how much devastation they can bring to bear, I find this idea quite compelling. I don't know that I'd ever be able to talk the players into playing in a campaign with these rules, but I'd love to hear more about the...

Is a Wizard a better buffer then a cleric?

For relatively low-level and high-benefit buffing, it's hard to beat bless and prayer. And a lot of cleric domains add in one or more of those wizard buffs - anything from enlarge person to haste to stoneskin, just depending on how you go about selecting domains. And it's not easy to one-up...
