I think it is a little macabre to celebrate death... like dead-elvis week in Memphis TN. Celebrating his life... on the other hand, is more fitting.

All game companies and all avid gamers really do owe some sort of homage to the originator of the basic framework of how all the games work. Count me on board for EGG Day!

Actually all the above mentioned specialists (Beguiler, Warmage, Dread Necromancer) are all spontaneous casters, mechanically much closer to sorcerers than they are to the wizard class.

Ghost Touched: Necromancy, Inflict Spells, etc. Animangus: animals spells, lycanthropy, (animal) shapeshifting, summons/calling - yes, Harry Potterish term, but one that sounds pretty good for the magic type. Another way to look at the classes is via the specialist classes like Warmage...

The 4e folks have their own (sub)forum where they can berate folks who speak heresies such as not moving forward to the new edition.... and yes it seems they don't bother with this forum any longer.

I think I will try to setup using Basic Fantasy or even depart fantasy for a while for SciFi using Star Frontiers. BTW, both can be acquired freely.

Or appeal to the players themselves to indulge you with a little realism... The characters are literally caught with the pants down (as in unarmed, unarmoured, without their material possessions at the ready). Make the whole process of capture part of a narrative that you simply read/explain...

Raptorian from Races of the Wild... Just give them a facelift, tweak them a little, and call them Avariel.

Try a different approach to the flight... at 1st level, they can glide short distance only. Maybe a jump bonus at 3rd level, they can fly for a certain number of rounds before suffering fatigue effects at 5th level, increase the flight duration to turns at 7th level, add increased carry...

Certain aspects are great... Victory Points Feats to modify the effects of the Leadership Feat Example armies...

Have one of the humanoid groups attempt to parlay immediately (and give them a spokesperson who speaks common)... the allied tribe could then be used as a base and or source of fodder/meat-shields in an attempt to take another portion of the caves. I suggest that one of the Orc tribes be used...

I will say again, Red Steel (sub-setting) is awesome... ... lots of cool flavor that you don't find in any other setting that I am aware of. Actually cool catfolk, dog-men, a magical plague or condition, spanish/portugese/new-world-ish flavor sprinkled throughout. Very interesting stuff.

Mystara definitely has less baggage... and Red Steel rocks! Voyage articles give a great little overview of areas you could craft adventures in.

I will second on the cheap craft store acrylics. I have found them to be essentially/actually the exact same mixtures as the (much) more expensive RPG marketed ones, except that they have much more mundane names... like brown, umber, orange, etc. and not cool names like Dwarf Skin, or Ilithid...

I will be buying the PHB only when discounted 'used' copies appear, and even then I will wait until the discounts get to reasonable levels. Yes, I am one of those who is generally against the new edition (but without malice), and I will only be acquiring the PHB to facilitate finding a game...
