D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

I'd rather not go with spell points because that's supposed to be the sorcerer's unique feature. One possible additional flexibility that I've thought of, which is also a nod to old-school "Vancian" spellcasting, is that spellcasters with daily slots can choose to "memorize" a number of spells...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

For the sake of bringing this thread back to what I actually wanted to talk about, let's say we also house-rule eldritch blast to work like fire bolt. What then?

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

Warlocks are currently not my problem. Spellcasters with daily spell slots are. If warlocks subsequently become a problem, it is simple enough to add another house rule that a character can't benefit from more than one short rest in a 5-hour period, in much the same way that in the official...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

Not at all times. A warlock only gets a third spell slot at 11th level and a fourth spell slot at 17th level. From 5th level onwards, a wizard will have more spell slots than a warlock of the same level, although most are lower level (one 3rd-level slot, one 2nd-level slot, and one 1st-level...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

This wouldn't solve my problem because spellcasters with daily slots will still have a lot of slots to burn through before they feel like they need a short rest.

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

Not all spellcasters with daily spell slots have Arcane Recovery.

I might, but spell slots are the stand out for me right now.

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

Maybe a bit more background will make the issue clearer. I'm running two-player game with non-standard characters meant to emulate 4E characters by effectively gestalting a class with abilities that are mostly recovered on a short rest with a class with abilities that are mostly recovered on a...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

Isn't the game supposed to be balanced around the PCs taking 2-3 short rests between each long rest? If so, a monk is supposed to have 3-4 times their level ki points over the course of an adventuring day, and a 2nd-level warlock is supposed to have 6-8 1st-level spell slots over an adventuring...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

Sounds good, I'm not a fan of excessive and obsessive optimization, either. Yes, this is my goal. I honestly think it will put spellcasters with daily spell slots on a more even footing with monks and warlocks. If monks and warlocks now look better because everyone is more eager to take short...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule to force spellcasters with daily spell slots to take short rests

I think one of the problems with the current 5E rules is that the game is apparently balanced on the assumption that the PCs take 2-3 short rests between long rests during adventures, but spellcasters with daily spell slots don't have much of an incentive to take short rests. As a matter of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attribute Score Method

I use the standard array currently, but I've been toying with the idea of adding a random element to potentially create characters with unexpected strengths. First, assign ability scores using the standard array. Then, roll 3d6 for each ability score in order. Use the random roll if it is...

    D&D General 1 in 1000 chance

3 in 1,000, actually. ;) On the other hand, I have it on good authority that last, desperate one in a million chances turn up nine times out of ten.

    D&D 5E (2014) Rewriting Favored Enemy/Favored Foe

I would start with the basic Favored Enemy ability, but to ensure that it comes into play more often, at 1st level, the ranger gains all "natural" creatures - beasts, fey, giants, humanoids, monstrosities, oozes, and plants - as favored enemies, and can choose one more. The ranger gains...

D&D 5E (2014) Races with floating bonuses: Designing from scratch

Starting from scratch, I'd probably have all races grant +2 to two ability scores. One +2 bonus must be assigned to an ability score in which the race has a traditional advantage, e.g. Dexterity or Intelligence for a high elf, Strength or Constitution for a half-orc, or exchanged for a racial...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Versatility is GONE. Rejoice!

It seems to me that if we can't be offensive, disparaging and dismissive on the basis of race, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation any more, we need to find an outlet for it in rule and playstyle preferences.

D&D 5E (2014) Have the designers lost interest in short rests?

Actually, I'm wondering if the emerging playstyle is one that tends to ignore short rests. This is anecdotal, and I run a game using non-standard "elite" classes which emulate 4E characters with A/E/D powers by basically gestalting a class with abilities that are mostly recovered after a short...

    Level Up (A5E) Buffing Monsters

My point was, the monster challenge math presumably takes all this into account, but not the addition of magic items. This is a separate issue from whether you prefer an attrition-based or an encounter-based style of play, whether you prefer easier or deadlier or sandbox-style PCs can try to...

    Level Up (A5E) Buffing Monsters

Yes, I think magic items throw off the monster challenge math more than any other factor. I believe the game is balanced on the assumption that the PCs have no magic items, so as they accumulate more, the published encounter guidelines get less useful.
