    D&D 5E (2014) Level 20 Class Competition Ideas

Somewhat late to the discussion, but I think a standard one-on-one single fight overly advantages PCs with daily abilities. I wonder how the builds and tactics would change if the rules of the competion were as follows instead: 1. No preparation. 2. The fight is over eight bouts of three rounds...

D&D General WotC’s Official Announcement About Diversity, Races, and D&D

Well, this little piece of unfortunate advertising got a chuckle from me.

D&D 5E (2014) Brainstorm - stories to tell with WotC's new position on various folk (fka "race")

(Actual example from a solo adventure I'm working on.) The PC is approached by a kobold from a nonhostile community that raises chinchilla-like giant rats for wool and is asked to help find a rat that has been lost.

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Well, if the average orc is stronger than the average halfling, I have no problems with the idea that an exceptional orc is stronger than even an exceptional halfling. I also have no problems with the idea that an exceptional halfling is stronger than an average orc. That said, I think the best...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

Real life and current events have been providing a lot of inspiration lately. In the paladin solo campaign I'm working on, the 3rd level adventure is centered around finding a cure for a magical plague. In the 4th level adventure, I'm going to have a group of nonhostile kobolds that rear...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

We just need to re-imagine them as having a warrior culture and the natural ability to change shape into dinosaurs.

Sorry, class based alignment restrictions is so 3E.

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford on D&D Races Going Forward

So, back to D&D... I thought this is an issue where the dials and flexibility that were talked about in the development of 5e could be applied. Don't want all orcs to be evil? Then it is only these specific orcs who are evil. Don't want racial ability score modifiers? Then implement an...

D&D 5E (2014) Cure Wounds needs help or Healing Word needs a nerf...

I recently posted the following suggestions on another thread, although the objective was to have healing more proportional to a character's hit points: Cure wounds restores hit points as if the target had spent a Hit Die (including Constitution bonus) per spell slot level. Healing word...

D&D 5E (2014) People didn't like the Psionic Talent Die

This will be my last post on this issue in this thread as I don't want to derail it further. I'm thinking roll 1 Hit Die, capped at 4 + Con mod. This way, a larger Hit Die means a better chance of getting the maximum hit points restored, and a Con bonus means potentially more hit points...

D&D 5E (2014) People didn't like the Psionic Talent Die

Slight tangent, but I think this may have just inspired my next houserule: cure wounds restores hit points as if the target had spent a Hit Die (including Constitution bonus) per spell slot level. The other healing spells will need to be similarly adjusted. Maybe healing word restores only half...

As someone whose favorite edition of D&D is 4E, I completely empathize.

Unearthed Arcana Revived, Noble Genie and Archivist Revisited in UA

Actually, the rules say that a character can’t benefit from more than one long rest in a 24-hour period.

D&D 5E (2014) Swapping out Heat Metal for Magma Mephits

I did think about using scorching ray, but I thought Melf's acid arrow, with its initial and secondary damage on a hit, fit the narrative of being hit by magma better.

D&D 5E (2014) Swapping out Heat Metal for Magma Mephits

Let's say 3rd level, so based on encounter guidelines, a standard encounter should be with one CR 1/2 creature or with two CR 1/4 creatures. Anyway, take heat metal out of the picture. I've already decided to replace it with a fire version of Melf's acid arrow. I'm just wondering if the swap...

D&D 5E (2014) Swapping out Heat Metal for Magma Mephits

I'm working on a solo adventure for a paladin PC and I think that magma mephits would be way too effective as their ability to cast heat metal basically means the PC takes 2d8 fire damage every round, no save, until the mephit loses concentration or dies. I'm thinking of replaing heat metal...

D&D General Putting The Awe Back In Magic

Great. So the wizard gets to do seven awesome things before breakfast and the best the fighter can hope for is for the DM to say, "Okay, you cut his head off, I guess." when he gets a crit. Hard pass.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you let your player choose their magic items they get?

The question is irrelevant since I mostly run adventures published by WotC in 5e. The players get the magic items in the adventure. End of conversation.
