    D&D General On PC Death

I restart from my last save point, of course. Seriously, it's like you guys are playing D&D like it's some kind of arcade game instead of a CRPG. 🤔

D&D General Nobody likes an edition warrior.

I think of myself as an Edition Guerilla, actually.

    D&D 5E (2014) Players railroading dungeonmasters

By default, players should use the "This is Your Life" section in XGtE to generate their characters' backstories. Players who want a specific outcome from the random tables or a backstory element that is not in the tables must seek their DM's approval. Done.

D&D 5E (2014) Too Few Player Options During Combat?

My proposed approach does change the trade-off a little in that you still get two attacks worth of weapon damage dice, so you're trading static damage and nonweapon damage dice for the effect. But yes, as characters get magic weapons and other damage bonuses, it does get less attractive.

D&D 5E (2014) Too Few Player Options During Combat?

Here's a quick and dirty fix which I have not playtested and hence have no idea whether or not it is balanced. See all the lovely Battle Master maneuvers in the Fighter section of the PH? Open up all the maneuvers that involve making a melee attack on the character's turn to any character with...

D&D General What role do the planes play in your games?

The evil-aligned planes and the Shadowfell/Plane of Shadow are now my go-to source for creatures that have Bad Plans for the PCs' village/country/world/plane and which the PCs can fight without worrying if they are perpetuating racist tropes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends of D&D

Have you ever watched Pirates of Dark Water? Copy and paste from the Premise section of the Wikipedia article: "The alien world of Mer is being devoured by an evil substance known as Dark Water. Only Ren, a young prince, can stop it by finding the lost Thirteen Treasures of Rule. His loyal crew...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want out of crafting rules?

These points would also support the crafting system I prefer, which is a simple, no-nonsense trade gp and downtime for a magic item transaction. It literally takes about as much time to resolve as the DM needs to say, "Ok, you spend 5,000 gp and 10 days of downtime. You now have a ring of free...

D&D General What have you done with Orcs in your games?

I pretty much don't see the point in orcs anymore. If I need a CR 1/2 humanoid NPC or opponent, I can use the same game statistics as a orc (apart from darkvision) and call it human.

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

No, but someone else might if I ever get round to publishing the adventures I write. Why run this risk at all? What value is there in making an NPC or opponent an orc or a hobgoblin, if I can easily replace them with a human that has identical game statistics?

D&D General Old School DND talks if DND is racist.

Honestly, it's getting to the point where before I include a non-human NPC or opponent in an adventure I write, I'd ask myself, "Does it need to be non-human?" It seems more prudent to replace orcs and hobgoblins with humans that happen to have identical game statistics (except darkvision) as...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want out of crafting rules?

Let me state upfront my current gaming philosophy so you know where my thoughts on crafting are coming from: "The object of this game is to advance your first level character into as much of a superperson as you can." I would like crafting rules to support that objective, by enabling PCs to...

Tracking Down the Elusive Shift: A Review

“the true object of this game is to ... advance your first level character into as much of a superperson as you can.” (slightly snipped to accommodate milestone levelling) I think this perfectly encapsulates my gaming philosophy both as a player and when I'm writing adventures. If I ever...

D&D 5E (2014) What if healing spells only created Temp HP?

The argument cuts both ways. If a party without magical healing can survive a fight, you don't need to heal during a fight to survive it, either. It is not clear to me why the OP considers magical healing to be immersion breaking, and I think that some of the issues that the OP raised could be...

D&D 5E (2014) Suggestion replacement bonus proficiency for Life Domain cleric?

I recall reading somewhere that the objective of giving Life clerics heavy armor proficiency was so that they would get hurt less and can spend more spell slots to heal others instead of themselves. If you want to retain the AC boosting effect of heavy armor, here's my suggestion: Armor of...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e and the Cheesecake Factory: Explaining Good Enough

5E is my second favorite edition. No joke. My relationship with 5E is like 3E showing up at my doorstep, having lost a third of their former weight, with new clothes and a new haircut, saying that they had learned a lot from 4E, and asking, now that 4E is in a coma after a terrible accident...

Level Up (A5E) What would you call a 'Warlord' class? (+)

I'd like to suggest Constable, for the sheer ambiguity of whether it refers to someone of low or high rank. Copied and pasted from the Etymology section for Constable on Wikipedia:

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

I think the argument has gone on for so long, and both sides have become so entrenched in their respective positions that there seems to be no interest in or support for any compromise such as: Each race has a fixed +2 ASI that could be swapped for a racial feat/Each race gets a racial feat at...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Sorcerers' and Warlocks' Spell Slots Backwards???

I think the original intention of calling the slots that Warlocks use to cast their Pact Magic spells "spell slots" was simplicity - they more or less functioned like spell slots and there was no need to complicate the game by introducing a different term. Unfortunately, it's led to a number of...
