Mini Alternatives

Lego is just too versatile to pass up. Plus, what self-respecting geek doesn't have a full tub kicking around somewhere in their basement? The long pieces become walls on the battlemat. Large pieces occupying multiple squares on the grid denote large creatures. Tall, cylindrical bricks...

    gestalt characters

What specifically are your questions about it? It's a good option if you don't have many players in your group, or you want to "power up" your campaign, but it also tends to be a fair bit more work for the DM to rebalance threat levels. Cheers, Vurt

    Cause Fear

I would read that creatures of 6+ HD are effectively immune to the spell. It is a first level spell, after all, and the restriction is reminiscent of that placed on the sleep spell. But the language certainly seems to be rather ambiguous. Cheers, Vurt

Help w/ my cleric character? Please?

You may need to be a touch more specific. How do characters tend to die in this campaign? Swamped by monsters with lots of physical attacks? Nastry traps? Spells? Tactical mistakes? If the cleric is having trouble surviving than you have bigger issues than what prestige class you should be...

    The Temple of Time

There's a cool power in the Expanded Psionics Handbook called time hop, which basically projects a target forward in time for a couple of rounds. To have a room where that randomly seems to happen to people and objects might be a cool environment. Also, other creatures interacted with could...

Why not? Aren't we discussing this ultimately to make our games better? Cheers, Vurt

    Monk's Belt help

I personally don't have a stake in the matter, either, Seetan. My point was simply that the RAW on this is not clear, that it, in effect, the AW part of RAW contradicts itself or is ambiguous in several places, leaving plenty of room for discussion. Hence 4 pages worth of posts on the...

    Monk's Belt help

Please note the singular of AC bonus, as opposed to AC bonuses. You missed the next paragraph from the same source. Seems to me there are two monk AC bonuses, the bonus from Wisdom, and the explicitly labeled AC bonus. The monk's belt seems to imply that only one applies, but which one...

race & feat combos that destroy my campaigns melee combat.

Sounds a little ripe for a RBDM to throw in some spellcasters that target this character's Will save. I don't know if Dominate Person will work on a Stone Child, but even something so simple as a timely Confusion spell, or a Hold Monster should go a long way towards evening the odds. If he...

    Disenchanting Weapons

Not to my knowledge. But something close might be the Retain Essence ability of the Artificer class in Eberron. Basically they can salvage the XP cost of an item by "dismantling it" and use that to pay off the XP cost of a new item. Cheers, Vurt

Whisky for my men, beer for my horses!

When I think of the quintessential "paladin song", I immediately think Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around". If you haven't heard it, dig around for a copy.

    Boosting Grapple Ability

If you have access to the Expanded Psionics Handbook, you might want to take a look at the psychic warrior powers list. "Enlarge person" is covered by the expansion power, "Bull's strength" is replaced by animal affinity, and the first level power grip of iron gives you a +4 bonus to grapple...

    Odd grapple question

I was under this impression too until recently when I was forced to look it up. EDIT: Heh, dcollins beat me to the punch... *cough* There's a new Rules of the Game article on WotC's site that may or may not help clarify things: All About Grappling. Cheers, Vurt

    Melee Fighter Build Suggestions

Well, if you're going half-giant, I'd recommend at least one level of psychic warrior for the expansion power. A greatsword doing 4d6 base damage is nothing to sneeze at. Make the rest barbarian or fighter levels, and let the power attacking mayhem begin! Cheers, Vurt

Spike growth spell and damage reduction

Hmmm... Those are some good points. If any damage resulting from any application of a spell overcomes DR, then the fact that the spell description refers to the damage as piercing damage is irrelevant. Or is there some other situation where this would be important? That spell resistantance...

Help me find this feat... Please?

I emailed my friend. There is indeed a "Coup de Grace" feat in GR's Secret College of Necromancy (p.16). It allows a CdG as a free action, as many times per round as you have regular attacks. Requirements are moderate, BAB +3, Combat Reflexes, and Power Attack, as well as some ranks in...

Help me find this feat... Please?

I think, (and don't quote me on this) I remember seeing such a feat in a friend's copy of Green Ronin's "Secret College of Necromancy". Maybe. It was something like that. Definitely not a WotC book, because I remember thinking what a campaign killer that could be when coupled with a hold person...

That's pretty much how I'd have run it, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something as I am wont to do. Cheers, Vurt

Spike growth spell and damage reduction

How does the damage from the spike growth spell interact with damage reduction, for example, the (2/-) from a mid-level barbarian? Is the DR applied every five feet, or just once after the total movement taken by the barb? Normally spells causing direct damage bypass DR altogether, but in this...
