DM Advice needed re: unfortunate character death [long]

Had a weird one the other day... The setup The players were dealing with an appropriately difficult rendition of the Forge of Fury module. After storming the first level and clearing out most of the occupants, they fought the level's big bad boss and won, but one of the characters was dropped...

Drusilia Naïlo: The Making of a Watchman

@Dru: Great update! Hope things are feeling better for you. @Look_a_Unicorn: Nailo is listed as one of the elven family names on p. 16 of the PHB, which could be where your friend picked it up.

[FRCS:Harper Scout] Favored Enemy Skill Bonuses

Yes. The Harper Scout doesn't need to know that the creatures in question belong to the organization. Otherwise some of the skills might end up being less than useful, for example the Scout should logically get the bonus when making an opposed sense motive/bluff check to determine whether...

    Pinned by an avalanche

Well, I think it's vague for a reason. It would truly suck if your campaign of 2 years suddenly ended because an unexpected avalanche wiped out the entire party (something that happens to expert mountaineering teams all too easily even in this day and age). So my advice would be simple: make...

    "Mantle of Egregious Might" question?

How do I let the players survive this? (Not that I have to!!)

Darn it those pesky kids keep ringing the doorbell and running away! Grrr... Seriously, if nothing happens for a few days, things should return to normal. It's rough maintaining a level of high security. You can't take a leak without someone covering for you. You gotta check in, check out...

    Keen bows

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Keen bows Well, what about arrows with heavy, blunt heads? ie. arrow shafts with slingstones tied to the end of them. ;) See, I could see a flaming bow still imbue one of these suckers just fine, but a keen bow? Maybe it's questions like these that got the designers...

    Keen bows

Re: Re: Re: Re: Keen bows Sorry. Takes me a few to write these things. My brain can't process incoming and outgoing ideas at the same time, but there you go. :D I thought this was implied by the fact that arrows don't have a type descriptor listed alongside of them in the equipment tables...

    Keen bows

Re: Re: Re: Re: Keen bows The image of dozens of little faeries tirelessly slaving away at the bottom a quiver to make all the arrows sharper is just too good to pass up! :D Cheers, Vurt

    Keen bows

Re: Re: Keen bows To make things even more confusing, it's the launching mechanism that's considered piercing, not the ammunition itself! Take a look at the tables! Silly, but there you go. I see no reason you can't have keen arrows. It's not like their threat range becomes insane or...

    Keen bows

If a flaming longbow can transfer the flame to the arrow, I don't see why a keen longbow wouldn't do the same. On the other hand, checking out the SRD, it seems that Keen is not a property listed on the Ranged Weapon Special Abilities table. So strictly speaking, this is probably not...

How do you deal with characters when they whine in confusion?

I'd have a post-mortem of the combat, but only after it took place; possibly even after the session took place. Anything that might disrupt the flow of the game usually gets me to invoke Rule 0 for the time being. If the players are pissed, or confused, it can get discussed to death...

[DM] - To Sunder, or not to Sunder? (Break, Destroy, Steal the PC's gear?)

Take a look at the 2nd level Cleric spell Make Whole. The way I read it is that if the act of sundering the weapon doesn't let the magic smoke out (ie. you're still left with two magic pieces and not a retributive strike) then the spell can put the pieces back together good as new. Doesn't...

Drusilia Naïlo: The Making of a Watchman

Great job with the prequel, Dru! But somehow I can't help but feel that we were all cheated a little. After all, it's titled "The Making of a Watchman", and I have got to believe that some of that "making" had to have taken place early on in the watch itself! Count me as another reader...

drnuncheon's Freeport Story Hour - Book II: Inheritance

Well, now there's a parable for our times... Too often we look for a technological answer to our problems (in the story hour: the spellbook with a teleport back home) when really what you need is some good hard work (fix the ship with what you've already got)! My hat's off to you all!
