    true strike Scorching Ray question

Fireball? Area effect attacks ignore displacement. Glitterdust is nice as it has the potential to effectively give everyone else displacement (by which I mean a 50% miss chance), at least as far as the target is concerned, so long as they fail their save of course.

Qucik Draw to sheath a weapon?

Star Wars Saga Edition has a version of Quickdraw that lets you draw and holster weapons as a swift action, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

    Oots #509 is up...

Well, ah, hmmm... I guess there's no such thing as tenure at ninja-school.

    OOTS 506: Flanking Crush

The new OOTS (NOOTS?) comic is up: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0506.html In which Elan needs to dumb down his puns. Cheers, Vurt

    Instant kill

Be forewarned that, as the DM generally makes a lot more attack rolls than the players, this may hurt the players more often than help them. I've tried it in my game, and after a while, simply dropped the rule. It sucks as a player when there's just nothing you could have done, your character...

Should you be able to dodge a fireball by readying an action?

Using the same reasoning as for fireball, why wouldn't you be able to dodge the hold person as well? (Say you're at the extreme limit of range of his hold person, you know it, and you ready an action to move farther away.) If it works for one spell, why not another?

    Martial Adepts and negative levels

Unless it's buried in a sidebar somewhere, I couldn't find it either. I'd just treat the initiator as a spellcaster for the purposes of adjudicating negative levels, and remove one of their highest level maneuvers for each negative level, in addition to the standard penalties. It seems pretty...

    Portable Hole Question

So what happens if someone unfurls the rolled up portable hole INSIDE the Hole? I've personally always considered the rolled up magic item to be part of the Hole itself, and not merely a key to allow its opening. I'd simply never allow it to cross the boundary into the inside of the Hole, in...

    Player Revolt

I believe I was playing a power attacking fighter-type at the time. The +1 insight bonus to hit in lieu of the regular BAB increase provided by an actual level just didn't sit all that well with me.

    Player Revolt

I was playing in Shackled City, when at the end of the chapter "Test of the Smoking Eye", my character acquired a template that, in addition to providing no apparent real tangible benefit, also added a +1 Level Adjustment. It felt like I was being penalized for successfully completing the...

    OotS #499

Given that Rich has the opportunity to post #500 on Halloween, I have pretty high expectations of the next strip. Time to start chewing my fingernails... :heh:

Forget warlord, I want to play a "battle monkey". :D

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

Sort of, but presumably more towards the middle or even near the end of the story arc. Maybe give the players the opportunity to redo their characters via some world-changing event that they themselves somehow trigger. OOTS essentially gave us a fait accomplis. I think it would be more...

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

I wonder if it would be somehow possible for Paizo to, with their proposed 3rd Pathfinder series, somehow incorporate the transition of the D&D ruleset from 3.5 to 4 as part of the story itself. Cheers, Vurt

    enworld project: Spell Compendium Errata.

The v3.5 DMG has the exact line you quoted, but is further clarified by the following (which incidentally does not appear in the SRD): Emphasis mine.

    enworld project: Spell Compendium Errata.

Combust, at 1d8 fire damage per caster level (max 10d8), no save for damage (touch attack), with a chance to set the target on fire, seems to me to be a bit strong for a 2nd level spell.

D&D Essay #1: Imbalance of Power [EDIT: 2nd draft in post 44.]

Does it? How does it deal with situations where you cannot succeed or fail? Admittedly, I'm having difficulty trying to come up with a good example, maybe such a thing doesn't exist; the best I can come up with is trying to jump to Andromeda. If the roll comes up that I've failed, does that...

D&D Essay #1: Imbalance of Power [EDIT: 2nd draft in post 44.]

Actually, the statement very strongly reminds me of Godel's Theorem, which roughly translates to "All consistent axiomatic formulations of number theory include undecidable propositions".

In Previews for October and Beyond, where the article discusses the upcoming Rules Compendium, sunder is listed as substituting for a melee attack. (Only with a footnote 28 instead of a footnote 7.)
