    War as "necessary evil"

I'd just like to say a big thank you to Elaer for posting. It's not terribly often that I'm taught while reading the boards, not because I know lots but rather because many aren't willing to share what they've learned as well as what they simply choose to think. In this instance, you were and...

    Telling others how to roleplay

I agree. There are two levels of "what's good" at the table, what's good for the individual player and his character, and what's good for the game itself. While it's fine to work towards what's good for the individual, sacrificing the game as a whole to accomplish this makes little sense. If...

How do you grapple an elemental?

Would grappling prevent an earth elemental from melding into the earth, or would an earth elemental's ability to meld into the earth make it another poor candidate for grappling?

Any tips on spicing up an ocean voyage and/or battle?

Heee. I did get the first one by thinking of M+C... although the other ones are simply a few thoughts pulled from the various sea combat systems I've read, most notable being Savage Seas by WW. I figure as long as I don't spout mechanics, s'aright.

    Evil with morals?

You don't have to be evil in every possible way to be Evil. You can have a personal code that prevents you from being evil in relation to children but still be Evil.

Is there more to D&D then Dungeon Crawling?

Honestly, Fields and Dragons is a lot more scary than Dungeons and Dragons. The second those dragons are airborne under a limitless sky, able to snatch you, drop you, skedaddle to heal or drop a few fireballs on you from .1 miles up, do fly by attacks etc... you wish you were deep in a dungeon.

'Why I hate 'Lord of the Rings' '

Storm Raven's dead on. Tolkien is very much about walking the fine line. Hobbikses seem to have an easier time of it due to their lack of perspective (and being as tough as old tree roots as well in their corruptability stat). Beyond this, primary characters in Tolkien tend to make mistakes...

    Star Trek vs. Babylon 5

Well, the first point of contention I have between comparing SF and EA fleet size is that the huge numbers spouted by Deep Space 9 were mostly Peregrin Class fighters and small "destroyer / escort" ships (smaller than the Akira Class) not far off of Keldon Class Cardassian ships. The point of...

Is there more to D&D then Dungeon Crawling?

There's definitely more to DND than Dungeon Crawling. Whether or not this is the case from campaign to campaign is simply a matter of DM and PC preference. There are many monsters, rules, and weapons that are more in line with above ground combat than dungeons (You're in a 10x10 room... your...

Any tips on spicing up an ocean voyage and/or battle?

Some things to spice up combat on a ship. (tech may be too low in a few examples) 1- Sharpshooters. A common tactic was the placement of sharpshooters up the masts. These make nice targets for your PCs, as they're somewhat distinct from "average guy engaging in melee." 2- Sail Cutters. If...

    War as "necessary evil"

It's an interesting idea to think that Law can determine if an act is Evil or not, and while this might be a solid tack for a campaign, or in a setting where Evil and Neutral is relative, it isn't a sufficient enough argument to rebut the idea that the default absolutism of DND's alignment...

That's very cool info, thanks =)

    War as "necessary evil"

Well, for starters the campaign setting would have to be somewhat divergent from a standard medieval one. The primary purpose of the ruling class is to fight and war, and the implication that their actions are evil (but necessary) supports the idea that society is hinged upon something many do...

    What's the View Like?

Watching RotK got me to thinking that I definitely don't describe my world well enough. Usually my players are in a forest and see... trees and bushes. Or they're in mountains and see the path they are and maybe the valley below them. The sweeping vistas of RotK (especially the lovely view...

How does one fight with a reach weaon?

Break the glaive over your knee, go into club / short sword two weapon fighting crying "Kiiyah! Kiiyah!" like a seagull for the +2 psychological warfare bonus for your attacks. Or just do the five foot step back thing. I've never seen someone drop a glaive for a sword when combat closed unless...

    Non-coin currency

Towns on the dangerous frontiers can barter in Patrol and Wall. You can buy things, just about anything, by committing time to either patrolling the borders of your town's claimed territory, or by manning the walls. You can get more for "One on Patrol" than "One on the Wall," and merchants...

    'wait, wait, attack' fighting style?

As a feat for any class that allows an automatic threat 1/day (Kensai for example) this is a powerful feat. It's a good feat for those with a focus on getting threats and crits... but for the majority it's rather underpowered. Basically, you're sacrificing entire turns, repeatedly probably...

    Holy Symbols and Clerics?

He could probably remove the etchings without much difficulty unless you ruled they were protected by some divine power. Just by melting some steel or iron down, the etchings could be filled in, roughly or otherwise. The use of a tabard has been mentioned and is also a decent idea. Even just...

    'wait, wait, attack' fighting style?

An option is to roll his attack and his damage each round as normal, but instead of telling the players they took 9 damage on round one, and 8 damage on round two... you wait for round three, and roll for 7 damage.. then add it up, and tell the poor player he just took 24 damage. Now, this is...

    Small Gods

I Definitely have the Small Gods going in my current campaign (Exalted). One of the published cities in the setting has a marketplace where spirits and humans live together. At dusk I have lantern spirits awaken from inside their little wax paper lanterns that line the rooftops of the plaza...
