Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Yeah, the problem with this line of argument is that it assumes there is something that gives a good view of the state of the hobby. I doubt there really is such a thing. If you had really broad sales figures, that might approach it, but those are not, effectively, available.

A workaround uses other extent rules to bypass (to some degree) the problematic ones. It doesn't actually change any rules.

Then they'd be incorrect. That is not and has not been my point. I also disagree with your last paragraph but see no useful point in responding to it.

GURPS Fantasy / Dungeon Fantasy (and beyond)

Actually, its becoming more common for dedicated VTT maps to be gridless, but that wasn't always true. Loke, for example, produces gridless ones, but not the books, which are assumed to be for FTF use.

    Violence and (Geek) Entertainment

Part of it really is that adventure fiction is, while not entirely dominated by it, filled with violence, and at least Western RPGs are extremely focused on adventure fiction as a basis.

Yeah, that's all why I said "vaguely useful metric".

Sometimes you don't pay attention, Micah. I've mentioned that I've used house rules for my whole career in the hobby. What I won't assume is that everyone complaining simply has the option to put in a house rule. Because not everyone, I'd care to bet not even the majority, can. They can, at...

You have a problem with mechanical element X that you theoretically need to engage with to make your character work, and the character design twiddles associated with it don't help. A knowledgable player or GM can suggest ways to approximate the effect in another way that may not be obvious...

Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

I used to go to DunDraCon regularly every year, but I haven't done that in 30 years now, and the last time I even went to a local con was was at least a decade ago now. Cons might be a vaguely useful metric, but there's probably a pretty large number of gamers who've never been to a gaming con...

Well, that's another issue; whether houseruling the problem is more--extensive--than a simple houserule. I mean, its an extreme example if you have some problems with D&D style hit points, that's liable to require more than just a simple houserule or two (and honestly, probably hitting another...

I think that can be legitimate, but if you aren't a position to houserule it, that isn't likely to be any easier.

Though most of that runs into the same problem that its more useful for a GM than a player.

Breaking down the problem with them, and possibly helping them do a work-around that isn't dependent on the GM houseruling.

I'm suggesting that for many people talking about problems in a system, bringing up a houserule is an absolutely useless response. Even if you disagree, I'd think you'd understand why.

And if they don't, as usual, you get stuck living with the problem or trying to find another GM. Which means the problem has stayed a problem.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah, the overdependence on home value as a resource is, to say the least, not ideal, but probably to be expected in a country where home values are as high as they usually are.

Tall vs broad advancement in RPGs

Yeah. I did a more elaborate version myself some years ago, but it was more complex than most people wanted to fuss with (and was only really combat relevant). I'm not going to say no one ever went broad, but going tall still seemed to be the attractive path for an awful lot of people...

Which I've mentioned can be legitimate. But its not terribly useless in terms of talking about whether the element in hand is an issue in the game as a whole; this is especially true when the person talking about it is a player, not a GM, and therefor probably has limited say in what houserules...

If you see a significant difference from system to system in how they play, that seems a largely unfalsifiable statement then.
