D&D General 3rd party RPGs using the 5e engine: which ones are your favorite?

Shadowdark's my favorite. I'm looking for less rules, less customization, and more focus on the adventure.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I try to obscure everything I can about the monsters. We're as likely to encounter a four-legged black wyvern as we are a dragon with scales so deep blue they're black, that spits acidic fireballs and has a scorpion tail. I see it as a duty to my Players. To keep things fresh.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I haven't much time to write at the moment so I apologize for this half-baked thought. Supersymmetry in physics was "in the news" in the 1970s and '80s and I think it had an impact on the community. Or maybe Dungeons and Dragons impacted the physics community.

D&D General What weird CR8 (or greater monster) did the evil water elemental cultists set loose in the flooded lower levels of a desecrated temple?

The Elder Oblex is an "Invasion of the Bodysnatchers" kind of monster with a Challenge Rating of 10. It is found in Volo's Guide (the one in the Multiverse may be missing the Sulfurous Impersonation entry).

D&D General What weird CR8 (or greater monster) did the evil water elemental cultists set loose in the flooded lower levels of a desecrated temple?

How about an elder oblex in the form of a giant blob that fills the entire lower level in a "Crimson Oubliette" style dungeon. Now hear me out here. You can use the oblex' aversion to fire to justify using torches to keep the ooze at bay in a 30-ft. bubble as you explore the dungeon. Ignore the...

DDAL Elven chain armour. do you need light armour proficiency?

I don't fault you for presuming magic is responsible for the training/proficiency, especially since this item is found in the magic items section of the book, but I must stand up and put in a word for MA* and PAMD**. I personally would ignore the "rules" and instead rule that if you wear this...

    D&D General Secret Curse Help

That's definitely going to give them a reason to address the curse. I like it.

    D&D General Secret Curse Help

How about they can no longer see the light--they can only see shadows. Bright light is (magical) darkness to them and darkness is bright light.

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

Magitech and the demystification of magic. The nuance between warforged and robots is thin, and apparently was missed by the producer in some people's estimation. I suspect that some will find it perplexing that some of us are uncomfortable with robots but not warforged.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

The personality traits etc. already have guidelines for applying alignment to those traits. I think it was in the Ideals. I really miss the Personality Traits etc. and I wish they would have been included in the 50th Anniversary edition.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I added a third axis along a fanatic/apathetic axis. I did this out of frustration with Dungeon Masters who police alignment. Fanatics make principled decisions, whereas Apathetics don't care. Nowadays I don't engage in such baroquen rules systems. I just make Chaotic Neutral characters instead.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I didn't play 4th Edition but liked they way it handled alignment by giving us the "Unaligned" option. It was a better solution than my own which incorporated a third fanatic/apathetic axis and resulted in 27 alignments (although all 9 of the apathetic alignments were essentially the same as...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I think alignment is useful as a quick way to understand how to play a monster or Non-Player Character. It is also useful in portraying the mood and character of a city or other organization. 🙃 For instance, the flumph. Wow, it looks weird flying around with tentacles and spikes. And, it can...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

It's only bad when the Players feel like they're being railroaded.

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

I told my Players that this is an adventure path called The Curse of the Crimson Throne. It is an adventure path, which means there is a path, which means if we get off the path then we are no longer on it. I will be happy to create adventures for us if we get off the path and go in a different...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

And when is that? I'm 30 posts behind but I can see there's a [CENSORED]storm ahead. This thread has had many distractions. Bedir than made a comment and now a lot of us have latched onto that. Erroneously in my opinion but we're beyond that now. However, you Umbran, a moderator, have been...

    D&D General D&D: Literally Don't Understand This

The first adventure in the Golden Vault is trash. We played it and at one point one of the Players asked, in ernest, if their Character could spot any surveillance cameras; and the Dungeon Master had the balls to say, "No, of course not, this is a medieval world." This after we walked past the...
