Gary et al. were very much building the plane as they were flying it and discovering what even a plane was useful for.

Maybe, like a clay golem, they're constructs, then they become monstrosities when they get that breath of life. Finally they become humanoids when they gain a little knowledge about good and evil.

I read the entire 3e Manual of the Planes, and I've got to say it was a good read.
