Respect to Mr. Gygax and Mr. Arneson

In reading interviews with and articles from the designers, they considered the sort of changes you describe. This, of course, is flat-out not true. Were this so, I would expect one of two things: 1) to see the Cavalier, Thief-Acrobat and Assassin in the PHB 3e or 2) to see the Sorcerer in...

    Choice feats for bards

I wouldn't bother with Extra Music. After a few levels, you have all the bardic music you need for the day. I'd probably go archery, or at least Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot. Skill Focus (Perform) increases some save DCs, and it is just so bardic to be optimus omnium at music. Weapon...

    Favorite non-human PHB race.

Dwarves, though were WotC to go back to distinct Bilboish hobbitses and Kronin Thistleknot's kender instead of the bland mishmash that is the 3e halfling, I might go for one of them. Anyone but elves, who are only useful as dragon snacks.

    Gaming and Life in Nebraska?

My father is from Fremont, Nebraska, a city about a half-hour outside of Omaha, so I feel the need to chime into this. Spent I many a summer in Nebraska, and even first played D&D there, with a Red Box my grandmother bought and my brother and cousin. Lincoln is more or less a college town with...

D&D 4E The new & improved GURPS 4e covers are up...

I liked the retro look of the old new covers. Alas ... but I'd buy either one, since GURPS is my main game anyhow. The penis-shotgun drew some quite amusing comments on the Pyramid boards, FWIW. When the SJ Games employees get in on the act, you know change must brew.

How to Deal with a difficult DM?

http://host49.ipowerweb.com/~poxybogg/happyjacks/roleplaying/pointers.html has the best piece of GMing advice I have ever heard in point #3. Design problems, not solutions.

How to Deal with a difficult DM?

That is almost syllable-for-syllable a recent experience of mine, except another player was the leader. (As the group's other DM, I kept my mouth shut except to support the leader. Besides, I'm sure the players have horror stories about me!) To blame the players boggles my mind. I keep worrying...

Wizards Fall Releases (Races of the Wild, others)

Since everyone else is doing it and I'm a frigging lemming ... Expanded Psionics Handbook: No D&D Map Folio I: No Complete Divine: Maybe, if it had something I specifically wanted to play. I'll probably recommend it to one of the party clerics, however. Eberron Campaign Setting: No Planar...

    Eberron?

As a player? No real interest, but if there's a good GM who is running it, I'd play. My usual position unless we're talking about a game I just hate, like WoD stuff. As a GM? I like 'em gritty. A little too cinematic for me to run.

What is your Opinion of GURPS?

Any system can be majorly geeked. I've seen some AD&D 1e characters who were pretty munched out. D&D 3e, with its ever-escalating power scale, is much more power gamer friendly than GURPS. And, of course, there is the impending release of GURPS 4e this summer, which makes DX and IQ more...

    Rangers w/out spells

Or the 1e ranger with magic-user spells ... my goodness, what a screwball design idea.

    Are DMs better players?

This, too, is generally my experience. It's not so much from a rules standpoint or anything else, but rather understanding that a GM has to worry about the other 4-5 folks at the table besides you. Some players unwittingly hog the spotlight and don't understand when you try to let someone else...

UA, What variants are you using?

Contacts Reputation (or at least when the PCs are high enough level to have reps) Racial paragons Traits Flaws Players Roll All the Dice (at least for large battles) Incantations

What is 3.0 & 3.5 missing that previous editions had?

In no order ... * Super customizeable clerics. Like everyone else said, it added flavor. I wonder if the best solution wouldn't be a three-tiered cleric class idea -- the current class, the old crusader class from the Player's Options: Spells and Magic (S&M ... hmmmm) and the cloistered cleric...

[Scoop?] Libris Mortis: The Book of the Undead, from WotC

Mortuus -- dead (ppa of mori, to die) In -- negating prefix in + mortuus > immortuus I suppose with D&D undead, this should be neuter. My Latin dictionary gives the same word as to die in, to die into, to get sick over, with the reason for this death or destination taking the dative. I cannot...

[Scoop?] Libris Mortis: The Book of the Undead, from WotC

And, FWIW, those pronouns are actually in the dative case, though for many of those pronouns, the dative and accusative were identical in old English. Wizards nomen rectum scripsit, sed non totum nomen. Nomen plenum ei est: LIBRIS MORTIS PECVNIAM TVAM SVMIMVS Thus, it is an ablative of means...

What Variant Unearthed Arcana rules will you be using?

The domain wizards, yeah, they are a bit overpowered compared to regular wizards. The specialist wizard variants, however, are pretty weak. What you give up for what you get is mostly not worth it. Give up all your bonus feats for energy substitution 1/day per five levels?

What Variant Unearthed Arcana rules will you be using?

Using: * Racial Paragon Classes (if anyone wants to take a level in one ...) * Character Traits (one only) * Character Flaws (one character is taking one as a guinea pig, and he's taking Energy Substitution with that, with which we have always kind of had him anyways but not actually on the...

    Any Unearthed Arcana Reviews?

My valley elf thief-acrobat/cavalier fights with dual glaive-guisarme-bill-glaive-pikes so nyeah-nyeah-nyeah! It's just too bad he has hit his maximum level. Seriously ... The book is pretty darn nice, though it's surprising just how much of it is reprinted from other places. Defense Bonus...

Unearthed Arcana Variant Rules - Previews and Questions

Weapon skills in GURPS are much more specific than the UA groups. (Then again, GURPS weapons are a bit more specific in effects than D&D weapons.) UA *does* resemble the Complete Fighter's Handbook's broad groups. Personally, while I like the system in UA, I'm not sure how folks who are used to...
