I'm a little at a loss as to why WotC doesn't have more improved spells, ones that one cannot metamagic to hell. Using the cleric AC in the DMG as a guide, you could have an improved mage armor as a 4th level spell, +8 to AC, and a greater mage armor as a 7th level spell, +12 to AC.
