    A nasty trick I'm considering

Make him aquatic and put him in a tank made of Fresnel-lens glass on every side - he'd look HUGE. Also? GAS SPORES.

Why is "I don't like it" not good enough?

"IT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE GAME, NOT THE LETTER OF THE RULES, WHICH IS IMPORTANT. NEVER HOLD TO THE LETTER WRITTEN, NOR ALLOW SOME BARRACKS ROOM LAWYER TO FORCE QUTATIONS FROM THE RULE BOOK UPON YOU, IF IT GOES AGAINST THE OBVIOUS INTENT OF THE GAME. AS YOU HEW THE LINE WITH RESPECT TO CONFORMITY...

    B2: Keep on the Borderlands

B2 KEEP ON THE BORDERLANDS was my D&D rulebook for the first few years...I intuited out the rules that weren't covered and the rest of the rules you need are in the pullout pages in the middle and covered by Gary's advice to the new DM in the beginning. Although we did roll stats with a d20 and...

The fragmentation of the D&D community... was it inevitable?

They're grasping at straws; it doesn't have to be this way (see below). Oh certainly but the solution lies in incrementally getting rid of old players. Those willing and able to pony up dough will, those not will get over it, play older games, or play different games altogether. WotC is trying...

The fragmentation of the D&D community... was it inevitable?

No, no and nothing. In fact, if Wizards wants to be more successful they need to adopt Games Workshop's model of driving older customers away on a cyclical basis. Who do you think GW values more? The grotty old beardo with the cheese-cloth thin, faded TACTICON '99 shirt stretched across his...

Best edition for new players: pick any two

I'd start out with original D&D, then move to J. Eric Holmes' edit of Basic D&D. I'd go on to AD&D, afterwards, but original and Basic would be the two I'd start with.

What if WotC just said "That's it."

    No I didn't, Cochise.

What if WotC just said "That's it."

What if WotC, tomorrow, just up and said "That's it. We're freezing the D&D codebase. No new versions, no new editions. It's what we want, it sells, we'll write adventures and sell rulebooks. Enjoy!" I don't mean the financial or business "what if" for them. That speculation is beyond me...

3 reasons why the design team shouldn't visit ENWorld

I couldn't agree more with the OP and the idea of having a "paid person" to post; I did that around 2004 so I could focus on writing my AD&D modules; this is the first time I've been on a webforum in six years. Let me just open up another tab here and see wh... Oh...oh god.

    Creepy Atmospheric Music suggestions?

Richard Elkind and Wendy Carlos' terribly, terribly frightening treatment of "Dies Irae" for the original soundtrack of THE SHINING cannot be overlooked (as it were). On the topic of Kubrick films, consider also Abagail Mead's electronic ambient score to FULL METAL JACKET (there's a handful of...

The whimsical element of D&D vs AD&D

Sword +1 (+6 versus gas spores) - In D1 DESCENT INTO THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH. That's just for starters. If you don't think AD&D had whimsy, then...I just don't know what to tell you. It wasn't whimsical like, say, MARY POPPINS - more like TIME BANDITS. And at any rate, how much whimsy AD&D...

Boxed sets that make creative use of the box

There was a WH40k game called BATTLEFLEET GOTHIC. Your spacecraft in the game were pushed by solar winds, IIRC. To determine where the wind was pushing you at the beginning of the turn, you took the lid of the box, flipped it over, and printed on the inside of the lid was a results matrix...

How do you fit monks into Occidental campaigns?

I shouldn't have said "exclusively"; I've got like 10 things going on here today... but the point stands; AD&D paladins are based on Andersen's "Holger du Danske".

How do you fit monks into Occidental campaigns?

Paladins in DUNGEONS & DRAGONS came from Poul Andersen's THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS whose main character was based exclusively on Ogier the Dane, a mythical hero of Denmark.

The "Old School Revival" - The Light Bulb Goes On

Vintage D&D play is largely about the rules; newer rulesets encourage play styles that aren't really compatible with, say, original D&D. I don't have a book in front of me at the moment, but there is an admonishment in the 4e ruleset for players to make a list of magic items they want; it is...
