SoD, how can we accommodate everyone?

My goodness, why all the hand-wringing? The "solution" or the "accommodation" for everyone is to put the option in the rules that DMs can have save v. death in their games, or not. If not, then do this (save v. level loss, save v. inconvenienced, whatever). That's...really all that need be done.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

AD&D had, optionally a system by which "-10" did not necessarily equal dead. It could, per the DUNGEON MASTERS GUIDE mean that the character was maimed or disfigured (loss to CON or CHA, as appropriate) or suffered some other permanent disability after being revived. Also, just as a refresher...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

Okay I'm going to have to put my viking hat (wizard hat, actually, in my case) on for a minute and ask you youngsters about this. This is...this is kind of part and parcel, it's par for the course. Sometimes magic, even heavenly magic, is capricious. If it is in game terms a matter of life...

    Why is Con so useless?

I killed your master, and now you die as well. Clearly I was referring to a dwarven fighter-thief. Ki-YA!

    The Heart of the Matter

I don't want the RULES CYCLOPEDIA, I want a more AD&D like experience. With that said, I had nearly the same experience that you did with my now ongoing Friday nights game, except it was initiated by someone seeing my shelf of AD&D books. Fight on!

    Why is Con so useless?

Find me a dwarf who doesn't want a high CON. Oh, what's that? A poison needle? Hm, I'm a 3rd level thief, let's see I need...oh...an EIGHT to save. Oh and that nets me how many extra HP? Four is it? And blessed is the magic-user who has the available 18 to put into CON. "Can be killed...

    The Paladin and the Stirges

Don't mind me; had Noscript/adblock on; it blocks comments sometimes too depending on how the comment widget is coded.

    The Paladin and the Stirges

No offense but it doesn't look open from here.

I'll be brief here, Dave. You're right and the haters are wrong.

Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

This right here: Is an incredibly tall order. I honestly shudder to think about the task they've laid down for themselves here. This is like saying "We are going to produce a no-budget 11 minute silent film shot on hand-wound cameras that is going to win Best Picture 2012." The comparison...

D&D 5E (2014) Has 5E Restored or Diminished Your Faith in WotC?

Tomato/to-MAH-to, but fair enough. I think we're on the same sheet of music, just different verses is all. Well if you need some excitement with your job I can certainly go back to being an irascible, reactionary edition-warrior. :D I'm kidding! I kid...!

D&D 5E (2014) Has 5E Restored or Diminished Your Faith in WotC?

I don't agree; I think people like to have faith in a company. It hearkens back to the earliest notions of consumerism. Putting your faith (lowercase "f") in a company feels good, it establishes a bond. It says "I enjoy/depend reliably on this product." Whether it's frivolous (D&D), a...

Oh for goodness' sake, someone point those two poor fellows here! Aww, you gotta feel for 'em.

    Rampant Anti-Groggism

'sfunny, I played 3e for a good year plus, then off and on again since and I stuck my head in a PATHFINDER forum discussion about something or the other and I could not follow a single thing they were talking about. Note this is not a ding to PATHFINDER, or even 3e. But even given that I found...

    Gamist, Narrativist, and Simulationist

My opinion of that GNS thing is that it's junk. If it has any reality at all it is that it is entirely mutable and changes not only moment to moment but player to player. The person who invented that wants to actually really for real hold up a chunk of something physical - not an abstract...

Cleric - Holy Warrior or Healer?

Not voting! A cleric is as a cleric gets played. I mean, a cleric can back up the thief (detect traps, locate object), a cleric can fend off undead (turn undead) a cleric can wring some pain outa the bad guys just like the magic-user (spiritual hammer, flame strike, cause blindness, command...

    No Elf and Dwarf classes

I'm actually OK with the no race-as-class. It's weird and wonky to me (yes).

The worst of all editions? (humor)

Oh my god, all of these are GOLD. These however: "I need an axe for my build, not a sword. You do know what my build is, don't you?" and "Thanks to 5e's flexible combat rules, I can put aside the chair leg I've been specializing in up till now, and use this sword instead!" ...are a riot! :D
