    D&D General On Grognardism...

Could you elaborate on this? The sequences were all pretty well laid out I thought and easy to follow step by step.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

    A) You missed an opportunity to say "on the third hand" :P B) I'm not quite sure what you mean here? The Expert sets provided robust wilderness exploration guidelines the equal of the dungeon crawl procedure. C) Because I'm not sure what you are saying, I'm not necessarily seeing a...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

Please for the love of god can we not turn this into yet another 4e was great/terrible thread?! It's been done, played out to death and the edition war sits in annals of history. This thread has an interesting premise about why grogs (in fact or in spirit) prefer the older editions and later...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

The flip side of your rebuttal is that I could argue it makes D&D more accessible to everyone as the players don’t need to know the rules. They are free to engage with the fiction, you want to do something? Tell me, my job is to act as the interface between the player’s actions and the rules. I...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

To get this thread back on track (so it doesn’t become yet another discussion on 5e, a future 6e, why 4e wasn’t wow /oh yes it was/oh no it wasn’t/he’s behind you...) Another thing i like about the older games (along with their lighter rules sets) is how they empower the GM and players with the...

    Literally any OSE adventure.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

Nope. I’m not necessarily interested in other peoples’ perspective on my views in this thread as it’s not germane to the discussion point. It was the OP that wanted to know why we might feel the way we do and it’s been enjoyable reading why others might appreciate the games for what they are...

    D&D General On Grognardism...

Like I said, I’m already aware of this. I personally don’t agree with the concept of this being an exclusive domain of modern games. Nor do I personally like the way modern d&d tries to do this. It’s just not what I want from my d&d game, hence a return to a more classic approach.

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

And that’s perfectly valid. B/X is more “game like” in its structure. That might not appeal to all and like most things B/X, is easy to hack and modify to taste.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

I guess I’m a neo grognard? I enjoy old school and new school games (Currently playing pf2, AD&D2e and OSE) Never had d&d growing up as a kid in the 90’s (too poor to buy myself and no one else interested in my immediate family to buy it). But the occasional curious glances at my cousin’s...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

🤦‍♂️. This is back to the original point. Because it’s in a dense book, it gets difficult to parse out and cut the cruft or keep what you like. Which obviates the “ease” of using said material instead of creating stuff yourself anyway. The slim modules allowed for an easier grasp of the overall...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

But that’s the point, these procedures (or rules) can be done in 5e. I’m not arguing they can’t be. I’m pointing out that this is why I guess perceptions have changed because they are missing from later editions. Which means, if you are a new entrant, you don’t know, understand or realise this...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

This lists the sequence of play most clearly: https://oldschoolessentials.necroticgnome.com/srd/index.php/Dungeon_Adventuring Like I said, if you’re an old hand, you’d have internalised this framework. But imagine being a complete novice, cracking open the dmg today. It provides nothing. No...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Yes they did. Check out od&d, and b/x (or ose in modern form) for the explicit layout of these procedures :) If you’ve played the same way since 1e, you’ve more than likely just internalised them.

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Again, your use of those words show a startling lack of understanding of those concepts for someone who has such a strong opinion on them. 1) No definition of a sandbox includes explicit mention of meaningful choices anyway. This is because of : 2) Having meaningful choices is not a feature...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Because this is what you put in the prep. In the areas closer to the players, when you make a location, you might write a line. This gives you inspiration for what you want and the ability to seed rumours. The closer you get, the more detail you flesh out. This can also be done as hoc in play as...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

The way in which you use the words railroad and sandbox and meaningless choices suggest they don’t mean what you think they mean... Those locations are not identical, nor are they meaningless. Players would want to go there based on rumours they have, or quest leads. The map is just one of the...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Read Winter’s Daughter module (available in 5e and OSE), then get back to me. It already has that balance, and WOTC ain’t meeting it. This is by a small outfit as well, not a massive company, so I’m not giving them a break or making allowances for them relying on community good will to do the...

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

Oh yeah. The presentation can definitely stand improvement (which I think OSE adventures nail). But then, are modern wotc or Paizo adventures much better in this regard? 2 column text with text boxes to read aloud? The only difference is a lot of splashy, full colour art work that it fits around.

    The Lost Art of Dungeon-Crawling

What S’mon said. Plus there are already some encounters on the way to the castle in I6. Though indeed shame on them for giving a DM space to create rather than detailing everything for them. 🙄. I’ll take those 32 pages and expand on that if I wish, rather than Wade through a massive tome where...
