D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

ROTFL! :) Seriously, though: Imagine the many, many arguments the football players and the coaches would get into with the referees, without those gridlines on the field.

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

Yes, that point has been brought up more than once, here, but I think it's irrelevant when you consider the vast differences between the 2nd Edition and the 3.0/3.5 Edition rules. So, while it was pretty easy to play 2E without the use of miniatures and grid maps, playing 3.0/3.5E without those...

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

I think the method I presented here is a good compromise between those who want to roll initiative every round, and those who want to roll only once at the beginning of an encounter. And, yes, the end result of my compromise is to decrease the variance of the initiative rolls. Rolling 2d10 for...

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

And you're an active member, with over 2000 posts, at a D&D 3.0/3.5 message board because... ? :p

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

Perhaps a better "fumble check" would be this: Roll a d20, apply the same attack bonus you would've applied to the previous roll (if you hadn't rolled a natural 1), and compare the result to a DC that is equal to your target's AC.

Tell me about 2E's excessive product-necessity

Weren't the "Complete Handbook" series 2.0, and the "Player's Options" series 2.5? :D

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

I'll agree with you there, Tsyr. And during periods when I'm inclined to play an RPG with more emphasis on drama, style, and mood, and less emphasis on combat and tactics, I'd rather play with a system such as Ars Magica or Mage: The Sorcerers Crusade. (Unfortunately, the vast majority of...

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

In my 20 years of RPG'ing, the problem is not with the DM's and the players' ability to envision what's taking place in combat; the problem is with their ability to agree on what, exactly, they're envisioning. And given the exacting nature of D&D 3.0/3.5 (especially with things such as reach and...

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

While less than half of the many different games I DM'd, played in, or watched could afford the use of miniatures, most of them used some substitute, such as counters or dry-erase markers.

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

Right. But those other dice are used in gameplay only for determining damage. For everything else -- attack rolls, skill checks, saving throws, etc. -- the d20 is used. Hence, the "d20" System (tm). But you don't have a problem with units of time called "rounds"? :p

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

I've played and watched lots of different 3.0/3.5 games, during the past three years, and I think you guys are definitely in the minority. Even so, you do seem to be quite vociferous, for such a minority. ;)

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

But how do you know the dwarf ran past the barbarian, within the reach of the barbarian's weapon? But how do you know, exactly, where people are standing? All you really have is a rough idea. But even if you do determine, somehow, who is caught in the blast, your determination is arbitrary...

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

If you check your math, the maximum damage for a +4 greataxe is 16, not 12. :) Wouldn't that open a whole, new can of worms? Besides, what do I do with greataxes? There is no d14, that I'm aware of. ;)

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

Myself, I never assume that D&D players are stupid. Passionate, eccentric, idealistic, geeky... maybe, with some players. But never stupid. It was not the concept of armor class that I was wondering about, but the terminology. I've heard some of the uproar. But the fact is, D&D 3.0/3.5 is...

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

I think "defense DC" is a good enough term, since it's in keeping with the consistency used thoughout the d20 system. And, instead of saying "defense DC", players can shorten that to "defense". Furthermore, this term does not give the impression that armor is the only factor, here. Player: My...

D&D 3.0/3.5 is the Greatest! But How Come... ?

One of the things I appreciate about D&D 3.0/3.5 is how the system has been streamlined, how it's been made more consistent and intuitive, throughout, compared to the previous versions of D&D. But I'm curious... How come we're still using percentile dice for some things, especially since...

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

Couldn't the same line of reasoning be applied to standard "plus" enchantments, making them seem unfair... ? One guy dishes out a considerable sum of gold to replace his non-magical rapier with a +4 rapier. Another guy does the same thing, but with a greataxe. The first guy increases the...

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

Hmm... With this rules variant, a hvy. pick has a critical of "19-20/x4", whereas a rapier has a critical of "17-20/x2". So, the rapier has twice the chance of a pick for rolling a threat, but if a critical is scored, the pick inflicts twice as much damage as the rapier. A "keen" hvy. pick has...

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

As I said, this rules variant gives you a "median" result, which over the course of several rounds of combat, it pretty much what you'd get anyway, if you were rolling every round. Again, it's a compromise between the "rolling every round" and the "rolling once at the beginning of an encounter"...

Variant Rules from the DMG, for Combat in My Campaigns

But with my rules variant for "increased criticals", I think it's already been made "fair". I, for one, think that the *doubling* of threat ranges through the Improved Criticals feat and the "keen" enchantment was unbalancing when used in combination with weapons such as rapiers. (In fact, I...
