Which of these two methods would you choose for implementing armor DR rules... ?

We have several ways to deal with this... 1. The Dodge feat gives a +2 dodge bonus to your defense class if you're wearing light armor or none, or a +1 dodge bonus to your defense class if you're wearing medium armor. The Dodge feat gives no bonus if you're wearing heavy armor. 2. Parry (a new...

    Lightning Bolt!Lightning Bolt!Lightning Bolt!

That's why I dislike LARPs: Every doofus who plays a wizard thinks he can cast a dozen lightning bolts, one after another, within the span of one or two combat rounds. Talk about power players... ! ;)

    WotC Responds!!!

Heh. Does it really matter if D&D's name/reputation is "besmirched" in this way? I mean, if someone is really hell-bent on raking D&D over the coals, they have enough material in the Book of Vile Darkness to do it with. (Some of the illustrations, alone, in that book are enough.) And what about...

Which of these two methods would you choose for implementing armor DR rules... ?

Been there. Done that. What we ended up with, is this: The modified ACs of characters in heavy armor were only one or two points less than the modified ACs of characters in light armor, yet the former were getting a good deal more DR from their armor than the latter. (Actually, we no longer use...

    WotC Responds!!!

Myself, if I'm of the mind to buy a product like The Book of Erotic Fantasy, I don't give a fig whether the d20 logo is on it. Of all the things I'm interested in seeing in that book, the d20 logo is the least of them. :D (BTW: Just so you know, I have no intentions whatsoever of buying The...

    WotC Responds!!!

At the Gaming Report website, someone posted the following in response to WotC's press release... "Sounds a little hypocritical to me. They find it 'disgusting' but yet they market The Book of Vile Darkness that has necrophilia, rape, torture and other unsavory elements in it. "I'd rather have...

    WotC Responds!!!

Yeah. Right. Editors and marketers of WotC: "Violence: We are so far past that line, it's unreal." "Sadism and masochism: We can cross that line. (Heh. These role-players: they really like dishing out violence and taking it.)" "Torture: We can cross that line, too. (As long as the player...

    Encouraging Light/no Armor

By 2nd or 3rd level, player characters can easily afford masterwork studded leather or chain shirt, so the armor check penalty for those two armors become -0 and -1, respectively. This makes those two armors very popular among barbarians, bards, rangers, and rogues. If you're a halfling with a...

Which of these two methods would you choose for implementing armor DR rules... ?

First, two assumptions: 1.) You want to implement rules that give defenders DR (damage reduction) for their armor, instead of having armor making it more difficult to attack (i.e. "to hit") defenders. 2.) Of the many different ways to implement this, you've narrowed it down to the following two...

    Encouraging Light/no Armor

Two simple changes... The Dodge feat gives a +2 dodge bonus to AC if wearing light armor or none, or a +1 dodge bonus to AC if wearing medium armor. The Dodge feat gives no bonus if wearing heavy armor. The Mobility feat gives a +4 dodge bonus to AC against attacks of opportunity if wearing...

    Mercy versus Justice

Agreed. They're called "paradoxes", and all the great real-world religions are full of them. (It's only the naysayers and unbelievers who call them "contradictions".)

    Mercy versus Justice

The thing about justice and mercy is that there can be no hard, fast rules for their application. (Remember: Our legal system, here in the US, is administered through courts of law, not courts of justice.) To be truly just and merciful, each criminal case must be carefully, totally considered on...

Historically, What Was The Rate of Fire For Crossbows?

So, is the logical conclusion that, chain-smoking cigarettes makes one a fearsome shot? Hmm... I may need to ithrow that into the mix... ;) Seriously, though... Myself, I've fired both bows and crossbows. The fact that you can place a crossbow butt against your shoulder and line up the...

    My new system: TWILIGHT

One question, up front: Why the name, "Twilight"? Myself, I've thought of publishing my own house rules (which are much closer to 3E D&D than yours are, but are still quite extensive). But I cannot seem to come up with a good name for them. For the past couple of years, I've been working on...

Historically, What Was The Rate of Fire For Crossbows?

Inaccurate, in comparison to what? To firearms? Then, yes, crossbows were very inaccurate. But in comparison to a bow, a crossbow is easier to hit with. (At least, at short ranges.) But two full-round actions is only 12 seconds. That means a crossbow can fire as often as five times a minute...

Historically, What Was The Rate of Fire For Crossbows?

Being strictly historical, what was the average rate of fire per minute for crossbows? (When posting replies with numbers here, please don't draw from your head. Use actual historical references and sources.) The Compendium of Weapons and Armor by Palladium Books says, "An average military...

Myers-Briggs Personality breakdown of ENWorld members

Now, this is an interesting (and perhaps even insightful) poll... ! (That is, it gives indicators of what kinds of people are involved in roleplaying games and are active at this website.) :) INTJ, here. (I didn't take this particular test, but I've taken Myers-Briggs tests a few of times...

Why Does Concealment Afford the Same Miss Chance...

Ah. I overlooked how Blind Fight applies to all "concealment" situations, not just to those given by blindness or total darkness. Okay. I guess Blind Fight is a feat my example veteran fighter should definitely have by 20th level.

Why Does Concealment Afford the Same Miss Chance...

Simple enough. It says so right on the cover: "Core Rulebook".

Why Does Concealment Afford the Same Miss Chance...

So, then, the underlying logic is: a veteran - superheroic, even - 20th level fighter is no better at guessing the precise location of a blurred defender than is a newbie 1st level fighter. What I'm inquiring about here is strictly 3rd Edition D&D according to the original three core rulebooks.
