    My "Thieves Guild" Campaign

I'm a veteran DM, with a group of six mature (if not veteran) players. Having just finished a Forgotten Realms "Defenders of the Dalelands" campaign, we're starting a new campaign. This time, we thought we'd do something different. This entire campaign will take place in a fantasy Renaissance...

    Opinions wanted on house rules

Actually, in my campaigns, Balance is used a lot more than Tumble. For example, in combat, when a character is jogging across cluttered terrain, or standing on an uneven surface while in melee, they must make a Balance check to avoid a mishap. Usually, the DC for this is only "5". But when...

    Opinions wanted on house rules

I did this. Only, I call it Stealth, not Sneak. The word "sneak" implies moving silently, e.g. you sneak up on someone, from behind; or you sneak down the hallway, over creaky floorboards, while everyone else is sleeping in the adjoining bedrooms.

    Most over-quoted movie by gamers.

What about The Three Amigos? That one gets quoted a lot, at my gaming tables... - - - - Martin Short: I'm drawing a line. Men or mice, what'll it be? - - - - Steve Martin: They are going to kill us. Chevy Chase: What are we going to do? Martin Short: We're not gonna get paid, that's for...

    Worn out scenes

Exactly. You shouldn't be annoyed with Hollywood so much as you should be with American audiences; who, in general, want total escapism, with all movie endings being upbeat and tidy.

    Worn out scenes

Tell me about it! In a recent movie, the main character - who, up until this point, I thought was such a smart guy - shoots the villain, stunning him and dropping him to the floor, and then the main character grabs the girl and runs away with her. Then the villain gets up - of course! - and...

Which DVD's would I need for a Pulp Action/Adventure marathon?

What about The Further Adventures of Tennessee Buck... http://amos.shop.com/amos/cc/pcd/11338226/prd/17279741/ccsyn/260 I remember watching this movie more than once, ten years or so ago, on Skin-emax, er, Cinemax. It was a tongue-in-cheek, sexy pulp action movie, directed by and starring...

I hate reach and attacks of opportunity (old thread)

I appreciate why some players - especially veteran, jaded players - like to play characters that are out of the norm. However, IMHO, when a DM has to create special situations/opponents just to deal with one particular player's aberrant character, then that player character is unbalancing the...

Denver area - Gamma World/Darwin's World campaign, looking for players

We are starting a new Gamma World/Darwin's World campaign. We're probably going to use the d20 Modern system. Our current gaming group is taking a break from the 3E D&D "Defenders of the Dalelands (Forgotten Realms)" campaign that we've playing for the past six months. We've been meeting to...

    M. Night Shyamalans "The Village"

Hmm... From viewing this preview, The Village appears to be very similar to a movie I saw, back in the '80s. It was titled Eyes of Fire. It was set in the American colonies, in the mid-18th century. It presented an eerie, atmospheric tale of settlers who encounter the supernatural in the form of...

Gaming stores in the Denver area?

Black & Read is a great place to go, especially if you're looking for out-of-print RPG material. The shelves in that store are literally spilling over with that stuff! (Really, they are.) And you won't find yourself paying exorbitant prices for it, either. Just about all of it is sold at 50% of...

    DMs against the Magical Wal-Mart

If it's a typical D&D "high fantasy" world, like Forgotten Realms, then I have no problem with magic items being sold in stores. With all those mid- to high-level adventurers running around, looking to exchange all that magic loot they plundered from dungeons and what not; and with all those...

    Historical Importance...D&D

Of course! :) Likewise "of course", I was making an absurd (and pretend) statement. The very idea that G. Gygax has never heard of role-playing! Heh. But that's the sort of reaction you'd get from an elitist role-player who takes himself and the game too seriously.

Dear Mr. Gary Gygax, Obviously you haven't heard of role-playing. ;)

    Historical Importance...D&D

Individually, the names on that list weren't really silly. But taken as a whole, they were. Or at least I thought so. Then again, none of those names were truly as silly as Will Attackit (a fighter), Gluteous Maximus (a magic user), or Sir Ranrap (a paladin); names which I've seen in actual...

    Historical Importance...D&D

How interesting! Nowadays, players would tar and feather a DM if he tried saddling their characters with names of his own devising. The naming of one's player character has become a personal, almost sacred thing. Thanks for the anecdotes, Gary. I am a D&D history buff (at least, I try...

    Natural threats in a mine

Will torches really flicker when the party, say, enters a pocket of air heavy with carbon monoxide? Didn't miners used to take canaries in cages down into the mines with them, for early detection of carbon monoxide? I would think that by the time torches begin flaring brightly, that it's too...
