Oh please. Sounds more like the character was mouthing off when he didn't have backup - even after the DM game him an out. Behave like that, and not getting whacked is like taking a dump on a tarrasque and expecting to walk away.

I'll third the DCCs. I convert them to my C&C and Savage Worlds games. Great fun. One thing to note about many of the DCCs is that they have the more linear "get to boss to get the McGuffin, move to next challenge" mindset that I associate more with 3E, rather than the "open ended dungeon...

I started on the per-day side of this debate, but the more I think about it and think about how my favorite system (Savage Worlds) deals with it, the less I like (conceptually, at least) a strict per-day paradigm. I've never had a lot of use for the Great Wheel, but its an interesting read. If you're looking for a single plane detailed, check out Necromancer's City of Brass boxed set. Its pretty well done.
