D&D 4E Is liking 4E biased by how many books you own?

I don't have a lot of 3.5 books (the core, and maybe a few others - most are currently packed up since they were accumulating dust in the library). I still have a bunch of 3.0 books that I reference. I have a ton of modules, but I use them for the other systems that I play. I'm not exactly...

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

I get 1.6% - so yeah, thats about right.

    Munchkins vs. Powergamers?

I don't think the two are remotely related to each other. Powergamers build strong characters within the confine of the rules. They may plan and plot out advancement, they may not. They optimize. They make sure to take the best possible abilities/edges/feats/skills in the best, most optimized...

    RC Presents....Free Cheese?

The movie Heathers uses that phrase a couple of times, IIRC, including specifically "Color me impressed" at least twice - which I thought was pretty cool since that was the name of an early 80s Replacements song (off Hootenany, I think). As for the maps ... sorry, no talent here. :(

If we all rolled the normal way for stats, how come he has three 18's?

As a DM, if we roll for stats (as in C&C or D&D), then we do it as a group (best case) or at the minimum I observe the rolling (worst case). Now, its not that I don't trust anyone in the group (at least, not that I would admit to :) ), its simply that I don't want the appearance of impropriety...

Do you Run Published Adventures As Is?

Almost never. For starters, I'm usually converting the module to another system. Plus, I'm usually converting it to another setting. Third, I like to tinker. So, almost never.

    Savage Worlds for Spelljammer

    That sounds like a blast.

    Running & Playing "One Offs"

I'll also add (even though its obvious) that it depends on the game system. I can get a lot more done in a 4 hour session of Savage Worlds or C&C than I can in a 4 hour session of 3x. A month or two ago we ran a C&C game and cleared out the Free RPG Day DCC module, Sinister Secret of Whiterock...

On taking power away from the DM

I know. :) And I agree with most of what you've written in this thread. I just don't agree that 1E is more prone to "killer DMs", a (mis)conception I see bandied about quite a bit.

On taking power away from the DM

See, I just don't buy this. A DM in any edition is powerful; they set difficulties, players NPCs and monsters, etc. A DM in any edition could decide the local nobility was against the players and try to throw them in jail. A DM in any edition could sink a boat the players are on and drown them...

Any good alternate familiar rules out there?

Well, these are older, but might help: Dragon #84 - A cast of strange familiars Dragon #86 - Familiars with a special use

Has D&D changed Dramatically over the Years?

I think the playstyle has changed greatly as the mechanics have shifted. Consider just these purely mechanical items, which all lead to a different kind of game: * Leveling is much faster * Spells gained at levels are chosen by the PC * Search and Spot are done via randomizer (dice) Not just...

    Savage Worlds - battlemat required?

We had a few situations where the adjacent rules were abused. So we modified them. :) It does work out well. One thing we do is let players (and NPCs) declare themselves "engaged", even if they can't necessarily make an attack. So say someone attacks, kills their opponent and then moves next to...

    Savage Worlds - battlemat required?

In my experience, SW combat is as easy to do with the grid as without. Especially if you ignore the term "adjacent" in some of the combat rules and use the term "engaged" instead, specifically for free attacks from withdrawing and gang-up bonuses (so, to get the bonus or free attack, you must be...

On taking power away from the DM

The rest of your post I agree with, but this ... despite seeing this kind of claim repeatedly, I have to admit I don't understand it, and never really heard it spelled out coherently. Abused what? Is that really just an Old School thing (you mean, it doesn't happen regularly now?), or as someone...

D&D 4E 4E boon or bust for Old School support?

I guess my fear is that someone with no experience in this arena and absolutely nothing at stake will go around telling publishers what they should and shouldn't do, and blame people who have legitimate concerns based off real legal counsel as promoting scare tactics. That is something that...

This is my recommendation as well. One of my favorites.

D&D 4E 4E boon or bust for Old School support?

I keep looking at their modules. I've heard great things about Pod Caverns.

D&D 4E 4E boon or bust for Old School support?

Hogwash. What on earth would make you make a sweeping generalization like that? I'm a C&C guy (along with Savage Worlds) and I don't want a game like 3E at all. I want a game like 1E, with some of the cludginess cleaned up. I want a game like 1E that is slightly easier to houserule...

Would you buy new 100% compatable 1E modules?

I just ordered the new 1E DCC module (War of the Witch Queen), and have 1E version of Iron Crypts, and I've been looking at the XRP line of modules with an eye to buy ... So I guess the answer is yes.
