D&D 3.x 3E sucks, but keep playing it for next few months

For a board game or war game or something similar, I agree. For an RPG game, I vehemently disagree, and this is - IMO - the crux of the problem with 3e and other rules-heavy games. It caters to the mentality that "for everything a rule, and a rule for everything". That is just plain silly and...

How do fans of OTHER RPGs handle new editions?

'Course, the "edition" is really more of a new printing than anything else. The rules changes aren't substantive, and you could easily use any earlier editions you have without worries - and certainly not the conversion issues that have been typical between the later D&D revisions (2x to 3x and...

Which 3rd party publishers will survive?

I think they serve two mostly different markets, and not a lot of the folks that are big on C&C are going to switch over to 4e. C&C is basically a 1e clone with updated mechanics and many inconsistencies cleaned up. 4e is ... not. So, while the marketing-speak says that 4e is going be simpler...

D&D 4E 4E tidbits from WotC blogs (Updated:David Noonan on Social Interactions)

This is interesting, and kind of cool. I've DBized many RPG things before, and it does take a commitment to do it; making sure all the data structures relate properly is a serious task. Damn that would be a cool data architect job. That is ... not so cool. A major mistake, IMO. Another sign, I...

Are you worried about character conversion from 3.E-4.E?

Other: Please Post I don't play 3x, so its not a concern. ;)

Will the electronic table top affect miniature sales?

It won't reduce my mini purchasing at all, unless they use the effective set rotation as a reason to start reprinting a ton of the fringe pieces, which I have plenty of already. (But then, I don't play modern D&D anymore, so I buy the figures just to have a large collections of figures for my...

Class being penalized for doing its thing?

I keep thinking that, between the way they've described encounters and encounter setup, and moving the paradigm from per day to per encounter, that the new expectation is going to be that the party will start every encounter fully healed and fully stocked in terms of spells/powers. This kind of...

    PHB, MM, DMG covers

I like the new format and art as well (the logo is okay, but in general logos never do anything in particular for me) although I hope the books are normal sized and not funky shaped.

    D&D 5E (2014) Scott Rouse and D&D Team on 5th Edition ("satire")

Seems pretty simple to me (simpler than 4e purports to be, even!); if you see a thread by him, don't read it. :) As for "attacks" - I didn't find anything in there particularly attacking. Satirical, yes, but I've seen posts in the same tenor other topics, too. Perhaps it isn't the WotC guys...

Anyone bought new products, like Castle Whiterock?

And if you got Whiterock, spill about it, please. I'm not usually into megadungeons, but this one sounds particularly interesting. :)

There will be no 4.5. It is 4th Edition.

Think he'll still be working there if/when it comes about that you get the opportunity? History has an interesting comment or two on that. ;)

    D&D 5E (2014) Scott Rouse and D&D Team on 5th Edition ("satire")

Ye gods, satire is satire (and clearly marked, even). Some small amount of that was even humorous. As far as poor treatment of the WotC crew, if they're that thin-skinned, perhaps they shouldn't be in the public eye. Interestingly, Gary Gygax takes a lot of abuse from 3xers on these boards...

    D&D 4E Will you buy 4e?

I think most of that 10% will, eventually. Heck, I'll probably buy the PHB at least, just to check out new ideas, and I haven't played 3x in years. I think it will be a different 10% that won't buy it. But I don't think they'll post here.

    I probably ruined my battlemat!

Interesting. I've used the normal spray erase stuff for dry erase boards on my chessex mats, and it works really well. Cleans it off pretty thoroughly.

    Magic User "Special Effects"

That was my first thought, too. I love the idea for flavor, but I'm not sure I'd allow for the harmful effects, even minor ones. Cool idea. Consider it stolen.

Will I still be able to enjoy ENWorld?

FWIW, I've done the majority of my ENing as a non-3x'er (I play mostly Savage Worlds and C&C, and occasionally D&D Minis), and while I don't delve into the 3x rules forums, I hang out in the General forum, and haven't had any issues or felt terribly isolated. I like reading what people are doing...

The Timer stopped and the message was...

Um, you're kidding, right? So, you're saying it was expected that your site would go down when you made the announcement? You didn't think it was worthwhile to scale your servers so it could handle it? You're announcing an online initiative, but couldn't be bothered to show that you can...

Hey WotC, SHOW ME THE SLA!!!

My professional experience has been more like Umbran's. Consumer-based online content/functionality distributors rarely get the same kind of treatment that corporate-based ones do, simply as a matter of economics. The per customer leverage is much different when you have 100,000 customers paying...

    David Noonan on playtesting experience

Yeah, I was going to call BS on this timeline as well, but you beat me to it.

    D&D 4E I'm NOT upset about 4E

QFT. I'm not upset, I'm amused. I'm also looking forward to reading through the new version and seeing if there is anything worthwhile to steal and use in my Savage Worlds or C&C games. I'm hoping they slay all the sacred cows and add in all kinds of new stuff, so that 4x isn't chock full of...
