    C&C - Maybe A Dumb Question but . . .

The biggest draw for me of C&C over pure 1E or 2E is that C&C is simpler and more elegant, while retaining what I liked most about those versions (and I should say mainly 1E - I didn't get too much into 2E). And because of its simplicity and elegance, it is pretty easy to slot in any additional...

    Re-trying 1st Ed.

Wow. Everyone thinking about playing 1E (or B/X, C&C or other rules-lite flavors) ought to read and re-read that. What a great way of putting it. For characters, that was an overriding philosophy - your character's concept isn't determined by its mechanics or abilities, it is determined by its...

    C&C - Maybe A Dumb Question but . . .

I'm going to focus on that question. What exactly do you want to get an alternative to? Are you just looking for a faster version of 3x? In that case, I'd strip out the 3x rules that are bogging you down. The beauty (in my mind) of C&C is that it offers a ruleset to let you and your players...

    Lost Boys/Santa Carla RPG Sourcebook?

Get a city map of Santa Cruz, CA and a phone book with yellow pages for same. Then you're halfway there. (Visiting there once and checking out the boardwalk would be good research, as well. You'll quickly find SC is a city designed by people on drugs for people on drugs.) Then pick a system...

    Dungeon CRawl Classics

I really like the DCCs, and I don't even run d20 anymore. I've used them in Savage Worlds and will be featuring them in my upcoming C&C game set in the Wilderlands (along with some old 1E modules). I've found the DCCs to be both fun and challenging, and (for the most part) not too over the top...

Does social standing have a place in your game?

Yes, social standing can have a place in my games if the player wants their character to have some sort of special standing. In fact, we've built some pretty cool plotlines around different character's and the ramifications of their social standing. The trick that my players haven't figured out...

    Roleplaying accents?

I try to do accents for my important NPCs, and try to fit various accents/dialects to game regions. They provide nice differentiation between the DM voice and NPCs, and a good cue for players to know they're be addressed as characters. And you know, they're kind of fun, as long as I don't take...

Are we gamers an ungrateful lot?

Its not just gamers. Some people are just 'wads. And while I dislike the company in general, I find myself liking Sprint's approach to that sort: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/SprintDumpingCustomers.aspx http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19681390/

Computers beat up my role player

QFT. Ah, Medusa-on-a-stick. Good times, good times.

Which of those adventures should I get?

I voted for the DCCs, but Lost City of Barakus is a close, close, close second.

    Snow/Ice battlemaps or tiles

Check the Dundjinni board, I seem to recall there are some good ones there in the Maps forum. There is also the Frostfell Rifts map pack which has some decent maps.

Getting a full set is unreasonable

Interesting. I see more people belittling WotC than the reverse (and this coming from a guy who mostly despises WotC - the only things I buy from them anymore are minis and dungeon tiles). I'm glad both lines will be available. It will be interesting to see how many ppms Reaper releases over...

    Gamemastery Item Cards

I have a lot of them, and like them. I'm not going to use them for mundane equipment (at least until they fill out their mundane equipment selection more completely), but I will use them for magic items found. I'm a big fan of props, and love handing things to players. When they cast detect...

Help! - Campaign reboot without actual reboot

Three thoughts come to mind: 1) Do your players want to do this, or do they want to continue wandering around? Have you found that out? 2) If your players aren't adverse to the idea of changing to a more site-based campaign, co-opt them to help you. Ask them to come up with a reason or reasons...

    How Did You Start Playing?

Agreed. From our current group, one was recruited from the local yahoo group. One is my wife (who had played in college). One is a high school friend who played a bit back in the day. The four others were culled from friends that weren't previously RPGers, but enjoyed board games and such. So...

Where do you order RPGs online?

I use Amazon and EBay extensively. I've also ordered multiple times from Paizo, FRPGames, GameOutfitter.com (for D&D minis), RPGNow and Smith & Robards (the last two mainly for digital products), and had good experiences with all. I've also shopped at a number of places once (recently including...

Should D&D Have an Alternate Death Mechanic?

I suppose if characters died willy-nilly, you'd be right. But I don't recall saying nor implying that, and it is a pretty silly extrapolation to make. In fact, I said very explicitly: Don't mistake character death being permanent as character death being common. I like my players to do...

Should D&D Have an Alternate Death Mechanic?

Fair enough, although your next sentence certainly belies those words. :) But in the game you described death isn't final, its just a temporary inconvenience. You had me agreeing with you somewhat until the "rip off an ear part". And there's where we diverge. Death isn't the ultimate risk if...

Would You Give Wizards Unlimited Lower Level Spells?

No, actually. I'm not a big fan of video game wizards; I'm more of a fan of classic fiction - and most of the wizards in classic fiction (at least the sort that I enjoy reading, and on occasion, emulating) are forever not casting spells on a whim at every door they encounter, instead taking...

Should D&D Have an Alternate Death Mechanic?

Right there with you. Death may not be the only risk, as others have said, but IMO its the ultimate risk. If that isn't at stake because it isn't convenient, or bogs the flow down, or whatever, then - to me - the game is dulled. Obviously, YMCADV.
