MINIS! Where do you buy yours?

I use Auggies (an ebay seller) for minis as well, or buy complete sets (from various sellers, typically the one with the best combination of price and positive feedback) when I'm first collecting a set. I don't bid on minis anymore, because if you look at buying them from one place through Buy...

Rogues: essential class or sacred cow?

And though they came later, Silk and Shadowspawn are archetypal Thieves (they'll always be thieves to me). In a class-based game system, each class represents (or should represent IMO ... the vast proliferation of classes nowadays has watered this statement down) an archetype. One who Fights...

But they're the worst type of players...

I don't see Rules Lawyers as being those that know the rules and make sure to point them out. (We have another name for them - rules b**ches, and usually we designate one to help free the DM up from looking up rules). To me, Rules Lawyers are the argumentative types who try to finagle every...

    Heroic (good) campaign suggestions.

You could flip it on its ear; instead of trying to destroy an evil artifact, they have to preserve a good artifact from evil folks trying to destroy it. If you're focused around good arcanists, perhaps they're trying to preserve the Source of Magic, or something similar.

    DM or GM?

DM. Even though I don't even play D&D anymore (usually), its DM. Now and forever. :)

I am looking for some cities.

Off the top of my head there is also the City of the Invincible Overlord, and Castle Zagyg (C&C) has the city Yggsburgh that could be converted easily enough. There is also Lankhmar, and I believe a bunch of city supplements for Conan.

    Monster Manuals no more

Something like these, only nicer? (Scroll down) http://www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/miscpages/odd.html If TSR could do it, and Paizo can do it with items, no reason it can't be done with monsters.

Creative (but not annoying) Intelligence Penalties

We've done this before, and it works fine. The players have to buy in (as a DM I strongly suggest you don't assign them the characteristics - let the players figure them out as part of their character conception), but other than that, I've never seen any real problems. Little quirks like that do...

Combat and book keeping - How long does it take in your group?

We're actually about to start a C&C game in addition to our normal SW game (I've got the itchin' to run some old school). I suspect combat still won't be as fast as with SW. Very little can compare to SW for the combination of lack of bookkeeping/simplicity/depth of play, even C&C. In SW...

Creative (but not annoying) Intelligence Penalties

Since you have so many (relatively speaking), you might ask each of the low Int players to define one or two characteristics of what their Low Int represents (as it doesn't necessary mean "stupid", there are often other contributing factors) - poor memory, slow on the uptake, clueless (lack of...

This game is ridiculous -- same problems for years

Ah, the good ole days. :)

Combat and book keeping - How long does it take in your group?

I guess that all depends on what you want out of your combat. If you want long and boring ones that dominate your game sessions and bore your players to tears, then I guess I'd agree with you. If you want something more fast, fun & furious, something more fluid, with more options and more...

Combat and book keeping - How long does it take in your group?

Our combats are typically very quick, typically 5-10 minutes for a standard fight. A few weeks ago we had a combat with 30+ orcs, 7 PCs and another 4 NPC allies, and was resolved in maybe 15-20 minutes total (and that was with a brand new player). When we first started, we had a combat with 30+...

Ruins of the Wild (DD Tiles)

Try mat board (the stuff used as the trim around framed pictures). Its about the same thickness and weight (maybe a little denser) than the tiles. I use mat board to create tiles from other vendors (SKG, WWG, etc) to mix and match with the Dungeon Tiles. You can get it at places like Hobby...

    I'm done with 3.5

We quit 3x a few years ago, and haven't looked back since. Go check out Castles and Crusades or Savage Worlds (or both!) - they're both great games, simpler and more elegant, and sound like they'd definitely be up your alley.

    Looking for rules light

I'd second (or third, or whatever) Castles & Crusades. Its a good system, and if you want additional depth it easily allows you to add in whatever else you want w/out straining the system. (I'm adding in a version of Hindrances and Background Advantages, for example.) You might also check out...

    DMing with an Audience

We've had observers in our game before. One was the wife of one of our players ... who eventually expressed her own interest in playing. One has been my own 7 year old (girl). Our group is large enough that we often have a few people kicking back, and able to make coffee or chat with the...

game mastery- item cards, crit. cards, etc.

I like the Critical Hit Deck. I'm going to use it in my C&C game. I *LOVE* the Item cards, and am looking forward to the next set (Dragon's Trove, or whatever its called). The non-random ones are definitely better than the random ones. Morrus is right about their impact. I've found that giving...
