    Campaign Settings, and The GSL

That is the trick. As far as I can tell (and IANAL, and even if I was, this wouldn't be legal advice), its only the OGL that purposefully gets crippled. So, pragmatically speaking (that is, Open Gaming concerns aside), if you want to retain the right to use your campaign setting in the future...

    Are the WOTC forums borked?

I'm not surprised their forums are down ... again. I'm more surprised when their forums are up. They remind me of the Mac/Vista commercials, "I'm happy to report I've been error free for over a week..."

    Company Mitosis, GSL and OGL

AFAIK the Savage Worlds license has nothing to do with either the GSL or the OGL. As far as the OP goes, I don't think you could actually structure two companies that way, manage their IPs _properly_ and not "cross the lines". If one company was producing essentially the same product as the...

Question about GSL - Scott please comment

This is a point that kept popping into my head, and I think its key. They can revoke your usage of the license, but that doesn't mean the contract itself is terminated (similar to how if one part of the contract is deemed unlawful or unenforceable it doesn't mean the entire contact is null and...

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

Obviously, not all of us have your powers of recollection and information absorption. :) I find the older I get, the more valuable a good index becomes, but thats just me. I don't fully memorize books like I once did - heck, I can still flip straight to a variety of sections in the 1e PHB and...

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

Part of me wonders if a lack of a decent index isn't a purposeful decision to push people towards shelling out for the DDI. It will be interesting to see how the Chapter 4 organization will holds up with additional powers and options and such added. More fodder for the DDI, I suppose.

You reap what you sow - GSL.

I'll freely admit to being fairly clueless on the OGL, but something struck me as I waded through this thread and a few of the OGL Wiki threads. It seems as though most (<-- notice the word most, not "all") of the reservations about an OGL Wiki come from the idea of consumers having free access...

    4E and RPG Theory (GNS)

This. GNS is so much more interesting when its not being used as a club to beat people who aren't "doing it right".

New 4e campaign using Pathfinder's RotRL - Am I crazy?

I don't think its crazy. I like the Paizo adventures, I just don't like running 3x. So I'm doing something similar with Savage Worlds, and it has similar issues with levels and approach (even starting characters can mow through mooks). It just takes a little changing of approach, for example...

Opinions, please! Is this forum valuable to you as a separate forum?

I see elements of the current reorg mentioned to here. I like the solution presented, especially if 4e stays in its own forums.

    Not professionally. ;)

What do you make and what do you do?

I'm currently a web programming consultant, but I've been the Director of Development, IT and VP of Tech at various places. We're a two income family; my wife is the Executive Creative Director at a social marketing agency. Our usual group consists of my wife and I, a trio of professional geeks...

Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - How to get that feel in an RPG?

I've heard great things about Hollow Earth and Spirit of the Century (but alas, no time to play them all), and I've got a trusted friend who is always talking up Torg. My choice for pulpy action is Savage Worlds. With or without the Pulp Toolkit, and in just about any genre, it makes for great...

[Savage Worlds] What Toolkits are worth getting?

I pretty much concur with Flynn on the toolkits, although I like the Horror GM's toolkit a lot, and use elements from it quite a bit. And if you're going to do a Horror/Victorian game, I think you'd use it quite a bit. The writeup about ABs in the Fantasy Worldbuilder kit is invaluable, IMO -...

possibly looking for a new system - need recommendations!

I'll throw out Savage Worlds, which meets all the requirements as well. Fast, Fun, Furious, easy to prep, cross genre, supports minis extremely well (there is even a version and some setting books for purely skirmish), lots of combat options (and static toe-to-toe combat is highly discouraged)...

Help! Mass Combat Rules Suggestions Required

Savage Worlds has good mass combat rules. I don't think you can download just the Mass Combat rules, though - but the Explorer's Edition rulebook (the latest) is only $8-10.

Good 3rd Party replacement city for Greyhawk.

You can't go wrong with the Citystate or Bard's Gate, depending on the feel you're looking for. I'm also a big fan of Hollowfast (from the Scarred Lands) as well - a good place to throw some stereotypes on their ears and mess with the players heads. :) IIRC Hollowfast doesn't have a big city map...
