    Does WOTC have the right?

If you're talked about the d20 license, from what I read and understand, there is a sell off period after the license terminates (IIRC it terminates in June 2008 and there is a sell-off period through the end of 2008), and they'd given prior notice about when the license expires, and this all...

Savage Worlds = 4th edition Canada

Same here. The best game system around with best fluff around. (Best being my subjective opinion, of course.) I'd agree with a few others, though. As much as I love to play and run Savage Worlds, from what I've heard of 4e, Savage Worlds is much more like it (or rather, 4e seems to have taken...

    New GSL Announcement

Funny, I think anyone who actually critically thinks it through should be upset with WotC. It might be smart, but I see it as unethical and heavy handed. (It'd be like Microsoft telling people they could either publish software for Vista or for XP, but not both.) That said, I'm not at all...

Did Anybody Ever Play "Space Opera?"

Heh. I had that same experience with Space Opera (any a whole host of other games). :) I do remember reading the rules sometime in the distant reaches of past, and thinking it was more than a little unnecessarily complicated.

Serenity Role Playing Game. What is the good, the bad, and the ugly?

Yes, really. How about you bother to quote the whole chain, instead of just the little piece you decided inexplicably to focus on? [Note that wasn't even the first remark you responded to, either - and my remark was in direct response to yours.] My complaint was and is only that the...

Serenity Role Playing Game. What is the good, the bad, and the ugly?

Actually, my criticism wasn't based on time, nor am I damning them for not fixing issues. I simply said that I think the system stinks, and I likened it to a bad Savage Worlds ripoff. After a few folks pointed out that the Serenity system came first, I made the tongue-in-cheek statement that...

Serenity Role Playing Game. What is the good, the bad, and the ugly?

You'll have to pardon me, but a comparison to a 3 decades old system has to do with me thinking Serenity being a crappy system how, exactly? Old Coke used to have Cocaine in it too, but that isn't exactly relevant to whether I like Dr. Pepper today or not.

    Gnolls, gnolls, glorious gnolls

In AD&D, they were bigger and stronger, and treated with tremendous respect by "normal" gnolls (bonus Charisma, IIRC), and would often lead gnoll bands.

    monsters using their treasures

Man, it would have been really cool if monsters didn't use their magic items on our parties. :) Like the others, we always played where monsters used their stuff. Nothing more frustrates a player than a baddie with a cool gadget ... that runs away. :)

    Gnolls, gnolls, glorious gnolls

If you use Gnolls, don't forget about Flinds. Well, at least in AD&D (Fiend Folio) - I dunno if they're in 3x. Love the Flindbar.

Serenity Role Playing Game. What is the good, the bad, and the ugly?

In that case, you'd think they'd have had enough time to make it a decent system. ;)

Serenity Role Playing Game. What is the good, the bad, and the ugly?

Its certainly possible, although Savage Worlds was a system before Firefly was a TV show, so unless they imported the system (meaning the Serenity RPG) from somewhere else - which is entirely possible - I doubt it. I know the Serenity folks have claimed more than once that they didn't take...

Serenity Role Playing Game. What is the good, the bad, and the ugly?

Here is my take on it: * The system sucks. It is a bad Savage Worlds rip-off. * The fluff is great. Too bad there isn't more. We played a 'Verse campaign using the Savage Worlds rules with the Serenity RPG fluff, and it was shiny. :)

    Favorite Sci-Fi system/setting?

I'm a fan of Star Frontiers as well. For modern systems, though, I like to use Savage Worlds - it does sci-fi (especially pulpy sci-fi) really well. We ran a game using the Serenity fluff with the Savage Worlds rules and it played beautifully.

    If I were a grognard....

I did that twice. Despite growing up with AD&D, I could never make the switch to 2nd edition. Just didn't like it. Eventually we stopped playing AD&D and played a variety of other games. We did that for years, experimenting with this and that. Every now and then we'd run AD&D again for fun...

    opinions of "Asterids parlor"

Awareness of the alleged reasons and feelings about them are not the same thing. I am fully aware of the policy (among others), the centuries worth of reasons (good or bad), the various specific turmoil points that cause specific rulings (and precedence) and the attendant legislation. Anyone in...

Keeping interest in DMing a game

This was my first thought. My second thought was try to run a game in a format that doesn't require as much participation, or limit the participation if you're sold on PBP. For example, does your PBP run continuously? If so, run it on weekdays only, or every other week, or something like that...

    Suggestions for Speeding Up Combat

One thing I've done is offload as much responsibility for manual things on the players as possible. My group usually rolls the attacks and damage by their opponents, as well as saves, spells and anything else. Its practical and fun (nothing like a player rolling a devastating crit against their...

    opinions of "Asterids parlor"

I'm not sure if you missed the point on purpose or not. Given the general tone of your posts, I suspect so, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. The point isn't that groups are excluded from places like Asterid's Parlor (as you pointed out, or not), the point is that putting the shoe on...

    opinions of "Asterids parlor"

I highlighted parts of my original quote. I agree that the behavior is unwarranted. But look closer; except for pure sociopaths, poor behavior is almost always preceded by some legitimate gripe (at least to the person in question). Simply saying, "They're acting boorish" without an attempt to...
