Beginning to suspect local weather prognosticators are actually bards... 88 degrees and 70% humidity. Supposed to "Feels like" 94 degrees. Seems about right. I blame Snarf. Clearly his enemies have taken to punishing those around him for his misdeeds.

My neighborhood is on a hill and my yard slopes downward from back to front. As soon as the storm drains get overwhelmed on the street above/behind us, the water begins forming a river coming down through my side yard and flowing into my submerged patio. This usually happens once every five or...

What Actors In Specific Roles Are A Joy To Watch for You?

Willem Dafoe in anything, as mentioned. I'm particularly partial to Boondock Saints, though. And I'll second Sean Bean as Sharpe. (I can't really think of anything I've seen him in that wasn't good.) Ian McShane is just damn good in anything, as well. I'll also put forth Timothy Hutton as Nate...

User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

Mad Jack is my real name... (What, you never heard of a guy named Madalyne before?) Okay, Sir John Garrett, who became known as "Mad Jack", was an early D&D character... My first name is the Irish version of John, and my Catholic Confirmation name is John, so I'd started going by the name...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I'm currently doing a sexual harassment/diversity/etc. thingy for work... If we want to get paid for the time we spent on it if we did it from home, we're required to spend at least two hours reading the presentation, and there's a timer. I finished it in half the time, and am now in the middle...

Not something I learned today, but did you know the threaded metal screw dates back to 1775? And was being mass-produced by 1798 or so? I discovered this when trying to ID the ACW-era rifle bayonet I acquired several years ago - the fact that it had a threaded metal screw in it blew my mind.
