AD&D 2E [COMPLETE] Looking back at the leatherette series: PHBR, DMGR, HR and more!

They made a whole series of them in the early 1990's. The green-covered "Historic Reference" series, each of which covered a different historic era/setting, some of which overlapped to create a larger setting if you wanted to cross them over. A Mighty Fortress (1500 AD to 1650 AD) 16th and...

AD&D 2E [COMPLETE] Looking back at the leatherette series: PHBR, DMGR, HR and more!

The Complete Barbarian's Handbook was essentially re-importing the 1e Barbarian back into 2e. Updated somewhat and not just a reprint, but it was the one place I know of in 2e that had the Barbarian presented as a separate class and not just being a kit for a Fighter.

AD&D 2E [COMPLETE] Looking back at the leatherette series: PHBR, DMGR, HR and more!

The "green book" Historical Reference series are favorites of mine. I always loved D&D played in a pseudo-historical setting. I've long been sad that WotC has stepped more and more away from that over the years. AD&D 1e and 2e always seemed to be "Medieval Europe with Tolkien influences and...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

Well, for a forum that was created as a 3rd edition fan site, and still kept a lot of active 3rd edition players after 4e came out, it's frustrating when I come back here after an absence of several years and suddenly I'm treated like a weirdo for playing and talking about the same game I've...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

As I was discussing the differences in miniatures between multiple editions, and it wasn't purely about 3.e, since it involved buying a 5e miniature and find it incompatible, I went with General. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but I am becoming frustrated with the overall lack of 3.x...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

I specifically said in my post: That's the whole point. Seriously, this is getting frustrating, every time I post here about D&D, everyone just assumes I'm talking about 5e. Note this post is NOT tagged for 5e, it was tagged for D&D General. Does anyone even pay attention to post tags...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

Well, given that half-giants are a thing in D&D, and not just in Dark Sun either, they're setting-independent per the 3.5e Expanded Psionics Handbook, the idea of a human and a 17+ foot tall being mating is absurd. With a "large" giant that might be 8 or 9 feet tall (on the low end, for a Hill...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

Well, I'm not a 5e player, and the point of my original post is about buying minis for a 3.5 game, which does use a combat grid and RAW rather extensively.

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

Exactly. In many ways, it's a golden age of D&D minis like never before. Before 2003, there was just pewter metal minis. . .expensive enough that the groups I knew didn't even bother with minis. In 2003, thanks to the success of Mage Knight, WotC launched their collectable minis game, which...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

Increasing the size of a fire giant from large to huge would have numerous impacts on the game, it's not a harmless change It would change the space it takes on the battlefield. (you can't just say "it follows the rules for only a large base" when it's 3 by 3 instead of 2 by 2) It would change...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

It's not that they're too small, it's that they're too large. The problem is that a miniature I bought, that was made for a huge-sized base because WotC made Fire Giants huge in 5e, doesn't work in 3.x because in that edition, Giants are size large. The difference in large and huge sizes has...

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

I already thought of that and ruled it out. The legs are in a wide stance, it would not fit in a large base. It was clearly designed to take up an entire "huge" space.

D&D General Miniatures shouldn't be edition-dependent (a Fire Giant size rant)

With some money I got for Christmas, I decided I would expand my collection of miniatures for D&D games. I realized I never used giants in my D&D games, because I had no minis for them. So, I hunted around online at various mini stores and ordered some official hill giant, stone giant, frost...

Worlds of Design: What the Future Holds for RPGS - Part 2

I'd like to contest the idea that somehow we all just move over to a new edition. When 2nd edition came out, a LOT of D&D players stuck with 1st edition. I knew people playing 1e well into the 2000's When 4th edition came out, many or most D&D players stuck with 3rd edition or 3e derived...

    D&D 5E (2014) Urban Arcana 5e thoughts

I'd love a 2nd edition of d20 Modern, I really liked having a D&D compatible modern-day RPG. Urban Arcana was a pretty good expansion for it. The things in d20 Modern that people never understood or worked well, in my opinion: 1. The base/advanced class system. People hated having to start as...

D&D 5E (2014) What proportion of the population are adventurers?

Some people like the worldbuilding and demographics. There's more than one style of DM'ing. A more hands-off, free-form DMing style wouldn't worry about it, but other DM's like that kind of analysis and fiddly-bits management of the world. There's a reason that official demographics rules...

D&D General Do you track material components?

Focus components in 3e are non-consumed material components. The miniature archery target for the spell True Strike would be an example of a Focus component, so would the sticks for an Augury spell. In 3e rules, if you have a spell component pouch, you didn't need to track individual...

D&D General Do you track material components?

Giving every caster a +1 bonus to the DC's of one school of magic they can cast is a basic 5e rule? I think we might be having some very different ideas when you say "Spell Focus".

D&D General Do you track material components?

Do you realize this isn't a message board or website that is exclusive to 5e, and there are people here who know and play other editions? This site/board was founded originally as a fansite for 3e, and there are fans here of editions going back to OD&D in the 1970's. This thread wasn't tagged...
