Payn's Ponderings' To script, or not to script?

I wasn't thinking of the KO itself as much, at least not mechanically, more the when victory seemed secured taking it away without options on the players side. But now you mention it I dont like "miss a turn" conditions (KOs, sleep, paraylysis etc.) or all or nothing rolls either. I'm happy to...

Payn's Ponderings' To script, or not to script?

I agree Its hard with using tropes from film, books etc successfully, as they can be great framing devices and in story constraints can lead to improvising and interesting outcomes but they can also just be frustrating GM fiats. it's all about the details, whys and wherefores and context. It's...

    Out-of-character/metagame knowledge

If I tell the players "two trolls come out of the cave and attack you" relying on player knowledge of what a troll is to avoid me having to describe them from scratch, I can't really complain when they use the same knowledge to defeat them. (although I always usually when I'm not feeling lazy...

Embracer Group acquires Asmodee(Fantasy Flight Games)

Consolidation of a fragmented market. I suspect even as we speak someone is using the term "synergies" in an Embracer corporate meeting, maybe even "verticals". Definitely " cost savings". Probably some suit gazing over the city from the 50th floor boardroom with his expensive optical...

    Out-of-character/metagame knowledge

But doesn't not taking a hook because they know it's a hook and true roleplaers would refuse it mean that by refusing the hook due to OOC knowledge they are still metagaming? 🤔

    Out-of-character/metagame knowledge

I would put things like this (party splitting, avoiding PvP knowing other players don't like it etc) as remembering you are playing a game (with other people) rather than metagaming. To my mind metagaming makes me think of using outside knowledge the character wouldn't know to get an in game...

Payn's Ponderings' To script, or not to script?

I plan out a main story path with some rough either/or variations that the PCs could take and a few key set piece scenes (mostly in terms of atmosphere rather than outcomes) and then well not exactly ignore it but don't really follow it per se. I find it much easier to improvise off something...

    Out-of-character/metagame knowledge

Whilst breaking out of the adventure/story stereotypes can be great and can keep things fresh there is a reason that some tropes and beats exist. If you see a gun in act 1 and it isn't used in act 3 you can feel cheated. If an elf drops dead in front of you clutching an ancient scroll you expect...

    2400 & 24XX: a Beautiful, Three-Page, Micro RPG

I was just looking at these on itch. The art always grabs my attention I just doubt I'd ever use them. I suspect they'd be more inspiration for other things. But then $6 isn't a lot and I like to reward people making interesting things....

    Get off Your High Horse...

I say old chap you must be my kind of fellow. I had the same thing happen to me just the other day. And I had been in such a good mood setting the hounds on the peasants that very morning. 😁 I bagged the bird though. Hurrah!

What Is "Unnecessary Complexity" to You?

By coincidence I went from reading this thread to reading the below. It seemed possibly relevant.

    Melee Weapons sorted by effectiveness?

I'm happy to be wrong. I know what a longsword is and it had a long hilt so it could be used with two hands held apart for twisty-wrist-fancy-sword-action (yes that is the technical term thank you very much) it's where the bastard sword fit in I couldn't remember.

    Melee Weapons sorted by effectiveness?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the longsword was almost always used 2 handed and larger than the bastard sword which was the mid range between the standard one handed arming sword and the longsword. I suspect your longsword is the standard one handed double edged sword and it's...

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

There's an R in "cumftabul"?!? Who knew? It's just "ad". Maybe "advert" if we're feeling particularly formal or it's the queens birthday or something. (Actually we have two pronunciations for it. Some people say ad-ver-TIES-munt but we try not to talk about them)

Oriental Adventures, was it really that racist?

No you're right about that. I was rushing past to get to other topics and completely ignored things like scholarships which as you say do exist often from multiple sources. I still stand by the fact its not as simple as just saying Native Americans can get an education as if its a simple done...
