    Ampersand: 2011 releases officially gutted

There's a lot of quotage here that I could "me too," but just in case anyone from WotC happens to put any stock in these forums, let me just add my voice of disappointment to the crowd. I like that articles are being subjected to peer review now (this is a "well duh!" thing and I'm pretty...

    Bubble, Toil and Trouble: Witches

If you have a DDI account, the Compendium comes back with a lot of search results on "witch." A search on "hag" returns some good results too. (filter on "creatures" of course) You can use one of those or just use them as a guideline on creating your own. Or you could take just about any...

    Difficult Player

Ahhhh...the "it's all about me, starring me!" player archetype. This person is motivated by making himself (not necessarily his character) the center of attention. It really doesn't matter what you do, how you resolve the current in-game issues, he will continue to make your game all about him...

    D&D 4E Converting Adventures to 4e

I admittedly haven't done a lot of converting, but for the few adventures I have converted, I just treat everything that is not plot and fluff as black boxes. I rip the "black box" out of the existing encounter, I look to see what's accomplished in the encounter, and then build my own...

    Difficult Player

This is a great point to consider...is it possible that the player is doing a little LARPing at the table and in-game because he's not a very good role-player, and it's just his vision of how a half orc would behave? Your problem might just be an opportunity to encourage the player to role-play...

D&D 4E Perspective: 4E as one of "Ten most necessary remakes"

Hmm...by this criteria we should still be playing 2nd edition. :D I guess I think that 4e is "necessary" because it's the first version of the game that is well and truly balanced. Obviously there's going to be differing opinions on this, and I certainly don't want to start an edition war, but...

D&D 4E Perspective: 4E as one of "Ten most necessary remakes"

UnknownAtThisTime: Henc! That image set off my nerd-rage initiator 3 times in rapid succession before sanity kicked in.  And yeah, I was immediately turned off by Planet of the Apes being a must-remake. So I wasn't surprised that the 4e entry was mostly hollow too. Having said...

War of the Burning Sky: Thoughts?

Primitive, you might want to edit your post with a "Minor spoilers" tag. I know you're not giving away major stuff, but there may be some readers who want to be a little more surprised. :)

    Class Compendium Official Announcement

Yes. And anyone who thinks that DDI is just an aberration hasn't seen Monte Cook's new site, Dungeon a Day. Ridiculously over-priced if you ask me, but what do I know. In any case, I expect to see more and more publishers jumping on the the MMO style subscription bandwagon. Which is a...

    Leveling monsters without Monster Builder

IIRC, the DMG2 has pretty good advice on customizing and leveling/de-leveling monsters. Right now you can pick one up used for $11.65 on Amazon--slightly more than a 1 month sub to Insider, but it will last longer. :)

    Action Cards

Yep, same thing. For example, if on an enemy's turn he provokes an opportunity attack by you, then you get to resolve your opportunity attack. If during his same turn he provokes another opportunity attack by you, you don't get another one. But you do potentially get another opportunity...

    The Three Act Goblin

Feel free to start a new thread, I'd love to hear your thoughts, and I'm always open to differing ideas. :)

    The Three Act Goblin

Thanks for the input, really appreciate it. The concept is still very much "alpha," and although it's an intriguing idea (to me at least), you're right to be sceptical. Hopefully I haven't given the impression that everyone should implement this design in their campaign RIGHT NOW!!!!! :) I...

    The Three Act Goblin

Thanks for the input Camelot! I guess I was pulling my punches because it's somewhat bad form to kill 1st level PCs. :) One idea I rejected but maybe will re-implement was giving him a reach weapon (like a glaive) instead of the spear, with attacks on up to 3 creatures. I might give him a...

    The Three Act Goblin

Well, here's the first go-round on the 3-act 1st level Goblin solo. In the first act, Nograg is self-assured and cocky. He hops around the battle map tossing javelins at easy targets. If cornered, he'll use his spin kick to give himself some room. When Stage 1 drops to zero, Nograg is now...

    Making Natural 20 super fun

I'm always a big fan of doing what works for your gaming group. So take my comments as just how I see it. Not trying to tell you how to play your game, just some food for thought. Anyway, the big problem I have with big effects on criticals is that when you have 5 players, the odds of a...

    SKILL CHALLENGE: Castle Siege

Oh this is great! Too bad I don't have any sieges coming up in the immediate future, but that's going in the pile-o-idears for down the road. Thank you!

    The Three Act Goblin

Camelot, I think the major difference between the published solos and the 3-act concept is that after the transition, all effects are wiped away as if the next stage were a new monster. To me, this is the defining mechanic. I've seen way too many solo encounters end in the players just beating...

    The Three Act Goblin

Thanks. :) Although actually I see a lot of different ways you can handle the transition between stages. One of the first transitions I thought of was how Robert DeNiro took that beating in Cape Fear from the hired thugs. Act 1, he takes a vicious beating that would put men twice his size...
