    One shot adventure?

I'm not scornful of Essentials, I even own the RC and HoFL. But yes, Essentials is a branding failure. The sheer number of times the "should I go with 4e or Essentials" question gets asked on the boards supports this. Yes some players are scornful, but that's not what's driving the confusion...

D&D 5E (2014) If WotC asked us which setting we wanted next what would you choose?

I'd be sore if it was a crap setting where it was obvious that his design had received preferential treatment. But although I obviously haven't seen the other entries, I'm convinced he won fair and square. It might not be for everyone, but with the exception of Ravenloft and Dark Sun, I think...

    Transmutation Abuse

So your in-game characters only literally ever perform a single action and move every 6 seconds? There's no parrying, fancy footwork, ducking, lunging, jockying for advantageous terrain? It's just swing your sword and then do nothing else for about 4 more seconds? No I don't think you mean...

    Transmutation Abuse

Not true at all. The game world logic is just fine. If I want a game where the rules == game logic, then I'll play a war game. I play D&D because it's a game of imagination. Once you start insisting that the mechanic--whether it be powers or skills or whatever--has a 1:1 correlation with the...

    Ideas for an Adventure

My group would too. If I were DM, and was using the rider as a later adventure hook, I'd have him disappear into the mists or something. I'd roll dice as if making perception checks or whatever, but because at this point it's story fluff, they simply have a mystery on their hands.

I think it's fine where it is, don't sweat it. :)

    Ideas for an Adventure

Sounds like a fantastic hook. These kinds of hooks are my favorite, and I've even done such things without having the slightest idea why I was doing them at first, and then as the campaign progressed I was able to come back to that event and make it seem as if I'd planned the whole thing that...

    Transmutation Abuse

Read Raven's answer, it's perfect. As for why powers like this are the way they are, there are two design principles that govern 4e. (ok more than two, but these are the two that address your questions) :) - Abstraction: It makes sense that if you turn something into a toad, you could just...

discovering remaining HP's of a monster

Ah well when it comes to PCs, I allow all PCs to know the hit points of every one of their allies. I justify this by considering that as a free action the PC will be able to let the Cleric (or whoever) know exactly what their situation is, and that the PCs are familiar enough with each other...

    Transmutation Abuse

But again, with RAW the toad is going to be just as hard to shift as the normal creature would be. And if we're still talking about Vecna, I don't have his stats up, but I seriously doubt he's going to make it as easy as all that. :D

discovering remaining HP's of a monster

Depends on the monster. With "natural" monsters such as humanoids or beasties, I'll tell the PCs about what level of health they have left. When I'm using a virtual table such as d20 Pro, I'll let the players see the health "meters." For something like a ghost or other incorporeal beings, I...

Opportunity Attacks - no limit ?

To clarify, you can only make one OA during another enemy's turn. If two different enemies give you OA conditions, you can make one OA on each enemy's turn. So the OP's scenario, while very unlikely, is possible.

    Virtual tabletops?

d20 Pro and Fantasy Realms II are both very good also. I'm currently using d20 Pro, and have nothing but good to say about it.

    Transmutation Abuse

I think the key in the "Slimy transmutation" power is "if it [the target] takes damage from any source, this effect ends." On a successful hit, Grab reads: "Hit: The enemy is immobilized until it escapes or you end the grab. Your enemy can attempt to escape on its turn." No damage, except...

    Transmutation Abuse

Vecna is also immune to attacks by characters below 20th level, so even froggy Vecna has no worries against your 1st level mage. :D

    Boxed Campaign Settings

After having voiced my support for the "pro-box" crowd, I do have to admit that boxes do have their downsides, space being chief amongst them. I'm looking at my limited amount of book shelf space (that I have to share with the wife), and realize that I will probably have to (shudder!) break the...

    Level Up!

Yep. For years my group used to play with the rule that if you weren't there, you didn't get xp. During one campaign we set up an xp "vault" where players could elect to deposit some amount of their xp into their "account" whenever they earned it. The account earned, iirc, 5% "interest" per...

    Boxed Campaign Settings

Count me in for some boxed set lovin' too. It just wasn't the same cracking open the 4e Dark Sun book, when I remember back to opening up the very first Dark Sun boxed set (ok the spiral flip-books were...different, but still...), and it felt like I was discovering something previously hidden.

Need advice for dealing w/an invoker.

Take a cue from mmo's too. The more heat he lays out, the more "agro" he gets. And if memory serves, Invokers only get 4hp per level, yes? Be careful not to punish good play, but also remember that intelligent monsters are intelligent. If one member of the party is ruining their day...
