D&D 5E (2014) How do you measure, and enforce, alignment?

I see adventurer alignment as a continuum: Socially acceptable murder hobo Questionable murder hobo Problematic murder hobo :D -- I don't enforce alignment. That's the player's purview - it can change, and it should based on character growth and evolution. What I enforce is consequences, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

That's because the Huskies' muscles won it, being guided by a light, smart tactician. Put in a sport with strength and power, and it doesn't work. Hell, even MtF trans athletes are controversial, and that's after their testosterone levels have been low for a long enough time that their muscle...

    D&D 5E (2014) Medium Armor Fix

Especially when you factor in chain mail bikinis. Let's be honest, fantasy artists make stuff that looks cool, not stuff that's practical.

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

Yeah, as an old Grog, that's exactly what happened. Nobody played a class with a low limit. Nobody. It was too punitive to play a character with super low ability score caps, so we saw very few of them. It made for a very human / elven / half-elven campaign landscape. The only other races we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Medium Armor Fix

It means Medium Armor Proficiency - the feat and/or the class feature - is worth nothing without some meta-gaming with ability scores. And, in a game-ist sense, it makes medium armor proficiency penalize you for having a high ability score in the most useful ability in the game, without any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gandalf Initiative...more Mearls Initiative Fallout

Good thing that most of the people I've seen posting about actually *trying it* have said it makes combat faster. Theorycrafting vs. reality. This is a total 'Dad' thing to day, but don't knock it until you've tried it. I've seen it time and time again. "I'll hate gong to the water park." "I...

D&D 5E (2014) Rules clarification query: Darkness (2nd lvl Spell) vs. Mantle of Flame (1st lvl Phoenix Sorcerer feature)

Antimagic shell suppresses non-spell like things like a Druid wild shape, but doesn't dispel it. The Druid pops back after they leave the shell. I'd rule the same here. Darkness 'trumps' the magical light created by the lower level spell-like effect inside it's radius, but it doesn't dispel the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Booming Blade seems a bit powerful

This is a great conversation. I dig the chains of logic here, but I think this whole thing is getting to the point of splitting hairs to a degree that is contra-indicated by the simplicity of 5E. So, if you have to follow a decision tree of THAT level of complexity and detail, even if that...

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

Also, a few mechanical thoughts. -- I like the idea of 'roll the damage die as your initiative'. The thing is, it *does* mean you are tied to using *that* weapon when your turn arrives, and the 5E concept of a 'free' weapon draw before acting gets nerfed. So, I can see why all the melee rolls...

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

Trollish joke aside, I've been thinking about this a lot, and a lot of great questions have come up. I think the issue with a system like this is it attempts to add a bit more 'simulations' feel with the different dice sizes, but once you do that - add a bit of simulation in to the D&D mix - it...

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

I'm glad the designers of 5E didn't listen too much to the message board posts of players of 3E when they were designing Bounded Accuracy. Or Concentration. I can just imagine the teeth gnashing and whining that would have happened on message boards back then. Before even playing it, they...

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

That's been discussed in other places - using the damage dice as the initiative roll. I like it aesthetically. It would be very 2E, because Weapon Speed was all about 'why does that dude with the 12' pike act before the dude with a dagger'? It would make martials declare actions with far more...

The dude's run it at Cons. That is the absolute worst place to do anything new ever. I'm excited and will try it my next few games.

    D&D 5E (2014) Self sufficiency

I kind of agree. Survivalists live well, but modestly, unless they're in really abundant surroundings. And those tend to get colonized quickly. 'Comfortable' seems like glamping to me. (Glamorous camping. Ugh.)

D&D 5E (2014) To own 5E books or not to own 5E books that is the Question

Everyone at our table owns the PHB. DMs also own DMG and Monster Manual. We have 3 DMs, so we trade off on buying other stuff, like supplements or campaigns.
