D&D 5E (2014) Disarming a caster's component pouch to prevent him from casting spells

If you want to offer something like it to others, then it has should be VERY weak in comparison. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a class-only feature requiring a limited resource to fuel. Just like I have to constantly fight players who want to cast spells in a clever way to get 'Subtle Spell' for free.

D&D 5E (2014) Reliable Talent. What the what?

It didn't really keep the spirit of the original, because the original was 'talk through it in the way the book says here or die'. It's great for a high-stakes, timed tournament adventure, and terrible for characters that players are invested in. So IMO it's not the same.

D&D 5E (2014) Disarming a caster's component pouch to prevent him from casting spells

Yeah, to see how they will react, run an encounter with an equal number of spellcasters, each equipped with Counterspell. Then, add a Battlemaster with Disarm and a couple other 'I nerf you this round' maneuvers. Their reactions will be telling.

D&D 5E (2014) Disarming a caster's component pouch to prevent him from casting spells

90% of the component rules are there for flavor. Arcane casters have a bunch of odd creepy things with them or some cumbersome expensive obvious focus, Clerics have theirs emblazoned on their shields, Druids carry some plant-related thing, etcetera. They each have different mechanical benefits...

D&D 5E (2014) What Class Would Marvel Characters Have in D&D?

It's hard to see any comic book character as a straight class, except for some boring C-listers like Black Knight.Thor, to me, is a multiclass Bear Totem Barbarian and Tempest Cleric. He's too damn resilient to be anything else, and his weakness to mental sorcery makes perfect sense. His...

Over Half Of New D&D Players Got Into Game From Watching Online Play

Yes, they should treat their elf dragon fantasy game with utmost seriousness and rules mastery and optimal, brutally efficient tactics -- OTOH, the players in CR take different 'archetypes' in RP - The elves are emo/morose and classically dramatic, the cleric is sincere, the barbarian is...

D&D 5E (2014) A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

Bloating HP also just makes casters shine even more, because they can 'nova' for much higher damage / efficacy per round compared to a martial. Balance requires having casters not blow spells every round.

D&D 5E (2014) A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

We allow short rests. Also thinking of making the overnight a short rest too for purposes of those types of abilities. It may make Warlocks a bit too powerful, since it's so short rest heavy, but we'll see - it's been difficult to deplete hit points across the whole party much at all before...

D&D 5E (2014) A simple solution to 'easy mode D&D' and the 6-8 combats problem

We enforce it by a tweaked version of the 'gritty' rest rules. Basically, if you're in a dangerous place, you only get a short rest and then recover half your hit dice overnight. No spells. No hit points. That happens until you get into a safe place to rest. Spellcasters are a LOT more careful...

    D&D 5E (2014) That’s a lot of charcoal! Find Familiar problem

Disagree. It's an abstraction of 'don't use this thing for Advantage willy-nilly or you will start to have to spend time and money much more than you anticipate'. Nope. It was designed for resource management and flavor. Powerful spells have expensive spell components. Other spells have them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fifth Edition.....Why?

How 'controlled' is that for inflation, population, stuff like that?

    D&D 5E (2014) Fifth Edition.....Why?

Sorry, truth is truth. In 3.5E around 9th level with experienced players, the number of things that were necessary to track became ridiculous. For me as DM, if you had an encounter with more than one kind of creature, and any humanoids with Feats and spells, then doing anything tactically...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fifth Edition.....Why?

Yeah, I miss 3.5E. Needing to use an Excel spreadsheet to build encounters and track stacking bonuses. Taking hours to design encounters and enemy monsters. Trap options everywhere. It was fantastic. All that customization!

Over Half Of New D&D Players Got Into Game From Watching Online Play

You realize several of them were friends for years before the podcast? And the game was a private thing for two years before the show? Now, for the dozen wanna-be that are springing up around them, with groups of small-time actors that never gamed before, you have a point.

Most of them, sure, but Talesin is a multi-RPG grog, and Sam *really* knows his stuff. And, I think we'd probably agree on one thing - I think they would be better off with a system like Dungeon World. Far less crunchy, far more about narrating something cool and then dealing with it when...

Over Half Of New D&D Players Got Into Game From Watching Online Play

I dunno man, Grog's improv with the sentient sword, and learning to read with Ashley are top-notch. And have you ever seen anything like Matt's powder merchant on any other stream? He kills it! There's a reason they literally make a living doing this stuff. They're damn entertaining. Edit: How...

Over Half Of New D&D Players Got Into Game From Watching Online Play

Be disturbed, so what. Critical Role is eight people who are professional actors, to-the-core nerds, and great friends that have a hell of a good time and bust out some amazing improv comedy. I've gotten a lot of inspiration that I've brought back to my games, and my players are all the better...
