How often have you used Beholders?

Granted, I'm a player and not a DM - but I will answer "how many times have I faced a beholder": Once. I am aware of a second time one was used but I wasn't there for that session. But still, that is only twice.

    Mearls Monster Makeover: Beholder

It's better than being taken out by a 1 on a DIE NOW spell save I'll admit. Being taken out from a single die roll is never fun (from my experience at least) and the fewer chances of that the better.

    Mearls Monster Makeover: Beholder

Besides, if they wanted to DDM the beholder some more I think they would in MORE save-or-die stuff. If you fail the save you are removed from the board. Simplfy it by making everything all nothing. Why would making everything keep track of hitpoints make it more mini based?

    Mearls Monster Makeover: Beholder

Being taken out at the start of what turns out to be a long combat can quite easily be called "boring". If you get taken out a few rounds before the fight stops then there isn't a problem. If the fight goes on for another 1/2 hour (or more) you then have a player just sitting there... because...

    Mearls Monster Makeover: Beholder

I will say I hesitantly like it. His reasonings for the changes seemed good, which is the real point of the article anyway, so from that aspect the new version works. I wasn't too sure about its ability to choose energy types of the rays until I saw that those would be the only five rays it...

Why is SR necessary to the game?

I've always felt that it was to allow fighters to shine on some of the tougher monsters. The idea being that these critters give the fighters a chance to pull their weight after wizards get Fireball and the like. Of course Acid Spells (and other no-SR spells) start to widdle away at this...

Thought Exercise: Give Bard Full BAB

What would be the use of a full BAB if you don't have the hp to back it up? This would turn them into a sniper during combat otherwise they wouldn't be able to use the higher BAB. The Bard stats are kind of decieving when you look at just the chart. Once the Bard starts singing they basically...

    No familiar, thanks.

A recent dragon had a couple of options (besides the staff familar) and I think Complete Mage has some options as well.

    Units of game-design complexity?

How about Insanity Ranking [IR]? Each seporate portion (spell, feat, special attack, additional book, etc) you need to look up adds one IR. The higher the IR the more likely you are to resemble a CoC character by the time you've looked everything up. A low level kobald or goblin would have...

"What" you are versus "who" you are.

Maybe it is the engineer in me... But as soon as there is a machanic to help define the "who" doesn't it become a "what" anyway? D&D Alignment has been brought up as a "who" portion of the game. But to me a "what" description would be 'CE Cleric of X' and such. To me, as soon as it affacts...

    David Noonan on D&D Complexity

I agree with most of this article (and the last one). I like the idea of simplifying large dice rolls. Sure, seeing the reaction on player's faces when you roll massive amounts of dice can be fun - but by the time you've rolled 24d4 four or five times the effect has worn off and you just want...

"What" you are versus "who" you are.

I don't really see how the rules can tell you "who" you are outside of some random table table that says "Congradulations. You are a total jerk!" or "You wouldn't hurt a fly." Stuff that says something like 'Pyromaniac: Gain +1 caster level to fire based spells' is still more "what" (+1 caster...

Should Psionics be part of the core in 4th edition?

I said have it as a 4th core book. There is just too much to build into the main book (at least how it is now). But I also think, like many that have already posted, that they need to be built and planned from the beginning.

    OotS 358

The last panel was... unnecessary. The chips joke harkened back to the last battle with the linear guild and was very Belkar. In my perfect version of that strip that would have been the last joke. The last panel took the joke one step too far (if it is actually what Belkar implies it is or...

Is it rude to offer other players unsolicited optimization advice?

Assuming the advice comes first then the act of giving advice, in-and-of-itself, is not rude. The method of delivery might make it rude. If the recipiant in question has already said they do NOT want the advice, then it is most definately rude.

Design & Development: Simplifying dice pools

Rolling a lot of dice can be fun. Watching someone roll a lot of dice can be fun. Watching my DM roll a lot of dice can be scary (from the first attack). Rolling a lot of dice again and again can be fun. Watching someone roll a lot of dice again and agian can get boring. Watching my DM roll a...

Posts incredably long rant about something at least 4 pages back. Makes some obscure referense to justify point (which, if reserched, would reveal that it is wrong anyway) and then continues to rant, having obviously not read the rest of the thread, for no apparent reason... ...except maybe to...
