    Killer DMs

I know you're right but still... If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I think my game has already been established as deadly. Everyone knows it. When my players come at my place, they know that their PCs can easily get killed. Of course I can talk about it with them and sure we can talk about many...

    Killer DMs

(I found plenty of these sort of threads here, but most of them seemed old) Do you consider yourself as a killer-DM (or GM)? Are you in a group that has one? What are your experiences with them? I'm still trying to calculate the exact numbers but I think that the following is at least 95%...

    Creating PC's with Personality

I guess it's nice if PCs have some goals. When a player creates a background, there should be some reason which drives you to become an adventurer. Even money and fame can be good goals. Loners with no goals make poor adventurers. I think that even the coolest and most bad-ass build is reduced...

    RPGs and mental health issues

He has some serious problems with his spine, I can't really translate the issue from my language to English. He can't afford private healthcare and naturally he has no insurance etc. so he has been queuing in public healthcare for a quite a long time now. Once they tried to X-ray him but he's...

    RPGs and mental health issues

I've been playing RPGs for about 10 years. During my time I've noticed that a significant portion of players and GMs tend to have mental health issues. And in this case I count substance abuse also as a mental health issue. My very first GM who showed me the ropes was addicted painkillers and...

    Alignments anyone?

I have a bit mixed feelings about alignments but I like them. Of all the things the player writes down on a character sheet, nothing provides more incentive for an adventure design as alignment. Most of the PCs are LG? Hmmm, perhaps I have to ditch cloak 'n dagger stuff... Or are they mostly CN...

Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master Survey

Interesting results. 47% design puzzles for each game? Really? Ehm... Can I play with you guys? Usually puzzles are pretty rare in games. I like them a lot, but they are pretty difficult to design. And it really depends what you count as a puzzle. Do you count traps? I don't. What is the...

Why do they do that? PCs and their intentions...

I always try to move all the events forward in a steady and quick pace. I observe how much we were able to do interesting things and fight battles during a session. I've noticed that it's generally a good idea not to explain things "too much", because that delays the session. So the PCs made no...

Why do they do that? PCs and their intentions...

The sphinx had a motive. The motive was as neutral as the sphinx itself and he had no intention of explaining himself to anyone... Unless a good diplomacy roll and/or argument was made. In that case the PCs would've heard the boring but very sensible story behind sphinx's motives. Motives are...

Why do they do that? PCs and their intentions...

The title reminded me of an incident which has haunted me for months now... (3.5) Midlevel PCs had collected bunch of magical weapons that were basically useless to them (mostly longswords +1). In my game there are no active markets for magical items, so they felt that they were stuck with...

Search Skill and Taking 20:House Rule, no taking 20 on search checks

If I knew they didn't have a chance to find it, that would seem like I was just trying to troll them. "Hey Jon Dahl, why did you give us a trap that was impossible to find? I hate you!" With random element this would be different. "We were unlucky, better chance my d20". It seems that you...

Search Skill and Taking 20:House Rule, no taking 20 on search checks

Yes, I agree. So IMO in these cases there should be two possible resolutions: 1. You take 20 and succeed. 2. You take 20 and fail, but your character thinks everything is ok even though it's not. Then you roleplay it like that. I think there should always be 1% chance for the option #2.

Search Skill and Taking 20:House Rule, no taking 20 on search checks

I wanted some random element of surprise. With "take 20" the trap is either found with 100% certainty or impossible to find. Something like 99% certainty for each trap would have been ok in my books. Just to clarify: Search modifier +10. Take 20 => Search 30 on every single square. If it's a...

Search Skill and Taking 20:House Rule, no taking 20 on search checks

That's a good point even though I think such players are very, very few. However such ridiculously super-careful approach would make sense (in a sad, non-heroic way). Personally I hate the "take 20" rule in D&D 3.5. Couple of sessions ago my players raided a small fortress previously owned by a...

    2012 PC Bodycount thread

Attention smart people: What's up with dragons? Why are they so astoundingly deadly? My desert campaign was about to end and as the final BBEG I had prepared a young Red Dragon. Players had three 8th-level PCs and the dragon itself was CR7. I know that my players were only a few and also all of...

    Stupid Monsters Part 3

Humor is very cultural. For instance most of the time I don't find too obvious and straightforward jokes that funny, but I often find myself laughing to subtle British humor. It all depends really, I think you and I have a bit darker sense of humor, perhaps? There is no right or wrong kind of...

    Common fantasy genre assumptions

Well maybe my English fails me, but is "assumption" a negative word by default? If not, then why so negative posts? :) Magic is clean, environmental, convenient and doesn't have any ramifications (Dark Sun etc. is not common fantasy). Religion and Theology are not confusing or ambiguous. Cool...

Looking for advice from more experienced players

Welcome! So you like playing magic based characters? Have you used abjuration magic or other protective spells? I'm only asking this because players often ignore them, especially when they are not so practiced with the game. Also I think this might be an issue with the gamemaster. I'm not...

    Stupid Monsters Part 3

I agree. They should have as many golems as humanly possible and also they should expand the list of animals to match National Geographic Animals Encyclopedia ;)

D&D 3.x Why the change in DR from 3.0 to 3.5

Well I have to disagree with you. I find it a bit more creative that you have to combine damage types with magic and special materials to be able to bypass different sorts of DRs. It would interesting to know how many weapons you'd actually have carry in order to be prepared for every single...
