Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

You'll have to take me out, I'm afraid. I was looking forward to the B/X game, and to playing either Vir Cotto or The Terminator in the d20 Future game. But MarauderX has scheduled the grand finale of his campaign for the DC EnWorld Game Day, and I just have to make it back down for that.

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

Not that I know of, but I'll see you at the game day and then we'll know. The only gamers I know in the Boston area are from the MIT Strategic Gaming Society group, and I don't know if any of them are on ENWorld.

D&D 3.x What do 3ed books tell us about 4thed?

They've learned that they can sell splatbooks, collapse the system under the weight of power creep, and issue a new edition. I mean this seriously (if somewhat bitterly); I don't like the business model, but I can see that it works.

    Half Sold

Hell yeah. 3.5 has left me thoroughly disillusioned with rules-heavy systems that focus on "character builds," splatbook power creep, and variable math ("Let's see, I'm raging, charging, Enlarged, and have Bull's Strength and Inspire Courage, and I'm Power Attacking for 4..."). I am very much...

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

I like breakfast and SilverMoon's d20 future (the mish-mash sounds entertaining). I really only know BECMI, 2E, and d20 (D&D and Star Wars), but I'm willing to give some other systems a try.

D&D 4E Psst... hey man, wanna play 4e?

I remember a great deal of enthusiasm for 3E, because TSR had gone bankrupt and most people I knew had already stopped playing 2E around the time when 2.5 (Skills & Powers) came out. 3E had a mathematical elegance in its additive multi-classing that made a great deal of sense (and I still...

    Why are you still here?

I'm still here because somebody thought I was too drunk to drive and took my keys. Also, I'm looting ideas.

Messing with the basic assumptions of the system

MarauderX has been a master at keeping the pressure on (starting with a seemingly endless goblin siege at level 1) and it's been by far the best D&D game I've ever played. Real risk of death, no guarantee of "4 CR-appropriate encounters and then you get a nap." Attrition is fun, and I say...

Boston Gameday - Sat, March 15th (FULL!)

I grew up in Newton! I'd be happy to meet the local ENWorlders now that I'm back in the area.

What do you do when your players refuse to succeed?

I never humor players' superstitions, but if you wanted to, here's what you might do: let them roll the enemies' attacks and saves.

D&D 4E Will we be able to play 4E without minis?

How is this going to make combat faster? IME, movement and measurement were among the biggest time-sinks in 3.5. Starting to move, counting squares, realizing you don't have enough movement, going back to where you started, considering another option, checking range... I can see that 4E will...

What do you do when your players refuse to succeed?

Don't tone down the difficulty and don't fudge anything. There's no such thing as luck and their d20s are just as likely to come up high the next time they roll. A d20 is simply a piece of molded plastic. It has no memory, no soul, and no malice.

    On the Importance of Mortality

The point wasn't that the enemy was SO far out of their league, but rather that he wouldn't be the kind to let mortal enemies live. Sometimes the challenge isn't tantamount to suicide per se, maybe the PCs even have a ~75% chance of winning, but the PCs tactics are flawed, something goes wrong...

    On the Importance of Mortality

Okay, let's say that due to your house rules, the barbarian stabilizes at -9 instead of dying, the rogue is captured, and the other PCs escape when they realize they're in over their heads. What now? Is the super-genius wizard-prince-general of Glantri going to let his two captives perish in a...

    On the Importance of Mortality

The reason that this is so much fun for me as a player is that it can be turned on the NPCs. To use a phrase from the Moldvay Basic Set, "There's always a chance." If the NPCs' resourcefulness, preparation, and luck fail, the PCs might triumph. Maybe we aren't SUPPOSED TO take on Prince...

    Alternative Names for Dragonborn?

    Looks too much like "Dokken."

Why should anybody ever take that as a joke?

D&D 3.x What do 3ed books tell us about 4thed?

One thing that was clear to me was that power creep sells. 4E could hold the line on this, but I fear that they will repeat the 2.5, 3E, and 3.5 "Splatbook Power Creep --> System Collapse --> Reboot" cycle. Maybe I will be wrong. I thought Lords of Madness was the best-written...

removing the Big 6 - how would 3ed play?

The problem is that spells do most of what "The Big Six" do. So are you talking about removing the spells as well? * Magic weapon * Magic armor & shield With GMW and Magic Vestment, PCs have the same power, spellcasters a bit less (if they're using up some spell slots here). Without the...

    On the Importance of Mortality

Combat, in particular, should be lethal. If I want a low-lethality game, it better be a low-combat game. If there combat with no risk of my PC dying, I'd just as soon not RP the fight. It's a scene where the PCs are slaughtering helpless opponents who have zero chance of winning, and...
